The World's Growing Acceptance Of Alternative Medicine

Tags: , , ,

Indeed there is a growing acceptance of alternative medicine among the majority today. It is actually of alternative and complementary medicine, and this happens to be a healthy acknowledgement for the world. Combining alternative and conventional therapies has created synergies which helped to tackle the many incurable diseases of our time.

So what is alternative medicine? And what are complementary treatments, on the other hand. These two terminologies were considered synonymous or used interchangeably, and often this is a common misconception. The alternative modality refers to medicinal systems like Acupuncture or Ayurveda which are used in place of conventional treatments. Complementary treatments however, are therapies used in conjunction with conventional therapies.

Massage is one, for instance. But in western countries, alternative and complementary treatment methods perform the same role. In popular parlance, alternative medicine has then come to be known as complementary medicine. And the term alternative and complementary medicine was thus derived. The most important forms of these therapies are Ayurveda, Acupuncture, osteopathy, herbal treatments, homeopathy and chiropractic.

These comprise the major list of these modality treatments. The list does not end there, however. Within the scope of alternative medicine are other medicinal systems such as nutrition, naturopathy, massage, aromatherapy, crystal healing and other forms of energy healing. Not including homeopathy, these forms of treatments evolved in ancient times.

Countries such as China, Egypt, Tibet, and Persia have long resorted to these therapies. The salient aspect of alternative medicine is that it focuses on the person as a whole. Treatments employed in this modality do not solely focus on the physical symptoms. The person’s lifestyle, environment and diet are considered as crucial in the treatment process.

Mental, emotional and even the spiritual aspects are also major considerations. Alternative medicine then has also been called holistic medicine. Alternative and complementary therapies are no longer exclusive to the mystic Orient. The Western world has in fact acknowledged these medicinal therapies as important components of the healing process. These treatment modalities have also been used to promote medical tourism by countries like China and India.

Westerners in search of holistic cures would fly to these Asian countries. A large percentage of women in the west resort to aromatherapy and massage. Quite a number of men prefer holistic therapies for back pain and sports injuries, too. Even practitioners begin to employ complementary treatments for chronic ailments such as asthma, cystitis, chronic fatigue and arthritis.

The World Health Organization has recognized the value of holistic therapies in the arena of recovery and healing. The WHO acknowledges that the holistic approach is capable of curing asthma, headaches, eczema and digestive disorders. This is the world’s growing acceptance of alternative medicine which is but welcome. It is the majority’s healthy acceptance of a vital synergy of healing modalities which could be the ultimate cure to the distressing and threatening ails of today’s age.

It has to be taken into account that alternative medicine originated thousands of years ago. Across the ages, holistic medicine has been successful in treating millions of individuals. And the modern age continues to realize how essential holistic treatments are. In fact, they can only be more expedient.
