Treatment and management of ailments be it from a simple flu to a more serious illness has found a growing following in alternative medicine. Not even considered to be part of traditional or conventional medical treatment, alternative medicine is a type of therapeutic practice that makes use of remedies from various types of traditional and ethnic therapies.
As studies show, people use this type of treatment instead of using the traditional medical one often because they feel it is a natural way to get better. Research established the many types of alternative medicine that currently are covered by medical insurance though there are certain types that are not.

Some forms of such that may be covered are chiropractic and osteopathic therapy. and are widely used. Other forms of alternative medicine that are not as widely used on the other hand include massage therapy, therapeutic touch, folk medicine, herbal medicine, special diets, homeopathy, music therapy, aromatherapy, naturopathy, faith healing, and new age healing.
It also includes non-western forms such as Chinese medicine, gi gong, reiki, and ayarveda. And further still are alternative treatments that are considered “less commonly practiced forms,” one of which is biofield therapy. This is a form of alternative medicine that works with your so called "energy fields" to heal you.
Another is bioelectrical magnetic therapy, an alternative medicine method that uses pulse and magnetic fields to heal you. This treatment as alternative has since been embraced by patients who are terminally ill such as those afflicted with AIDS and even cancer patients. People also use this to heal ailments such as back pain or migraines.
Instead of traditional painkillers, the patients would use aromatherapy, sound therapy or herbal therapy. Alternative medicine is even used on animals. Yet it is essential to know that alternative medicine has no known nor established scientific evidence. Reason why advocates and health experts would advice such not to be used as sole option for treatment and management of any ailment or should it be a substitute in lieu of prescribed medicines.
Through the years of continued researches, there have been no scientific studies to prove if they are safe or if they work for the diseases or ailments they are used for. As such, before using an alternative medicine, talk to your doctor, make sure your doctor feels it is safe and will not further cause you harm.
Statistics showed that about 36% of the American adult population embraces alternative medicine. It is widely believed that the sheer holistic nature of alternative medicine is what pulls people to it however alternative medicine as a matter of fact remains practically an unfamiliar territory. In the United States, widely used alternative therapies include biologically- based practices, mind-body medicine, manipulative and body-based practices, and alternative herbal medicine, Ayurveda, naturopathy, homeopathy and energy medicine.
Alternative medicine as alternative remedy. It works and can work yet must be in accordance with what your doctor or health expert feels will not do you harm but only compliment the prescribed treatment.
