Natural Medicine: Holistic And Integrated Wellness

Tags: , , ,

Connoted with the word “natural” is a sense of familiarity, of safety and of security. After all, when one says “natural”, it refers to something which is inherent to us, or the fundamental make-up of ourselves and our surroundings. By “natural”, it basically means something which goes with the process and balance of everything.

So when natural medicine is taken into account, it basically means the implementation of natural methods and herbal medicine. But natural medicine actually has a wider scope than that. Holistic and natural medicine are in many ways related and they both have to do more than just employing treatments. Holistic wellness is the foremost objective of natural medicine so other than applying treatments, it also has so much to do with healthy living.

By healthy living it means inculcating an obliging lifestyle and dietary habits. Natural medicine refers to medical practices prevalent before the advent of modern medicine. It is within the scope of holistic and integrative medicine which makes use of natural methods, herbal medicine and traditional practices to heal ailments. It is said that throughout history, every culture has natural medicine integral to it.

The Chinese have their phytotherapy and the Indians have the Ayurveda. The same can be said with Greek medicine. Natural medicine embraces the wisdom that wellness does not only mean the treatment of ailments. Rather, it is a way of living for an all-encompassing state of well-being which is that of the mind, body and spirit.

By all means, “natural” has everything to do with our true nature or essence, and such can be said with natural medicine. Natural medicine addresses the being as a whole. Through time, however, medicine has had advancements which make the treatment of ailments and chronic illnesses more novel, convenient and speedier.

Such advancements made a major impact in the arena of medicine, but suffice it to say that natural medicine, although not a quick fix approach to wellness, has not lost its essence. To some, natural medicine may sound antiquated but studies have in fact cited that it is an effective complement to modern medicine.

Health professionals recommend natural medicine to minor ailments such as coughs, colds, fever or skin rashes. But even more so, natural medicine is used in conjunction with complex medical procedures such as surgeries and cancer treatment. As for natural medications and herbal supplements, they are not meant to be taken on their own as substitutes for any food or medications.

Rather, they are intended to be supplements which would aid in giving a holistic treatment. If ever you are taking herbal supplements, never take more than what your doctor has directed or as instructed in the label. On the other hand, if your doctor is totally opposed to the idea of you taking natural supplements without any justifiable reason, it may be best that you get a second opinion.

Be wary though, because not all natural remedies are legitimate. As much as you may think that everything pertaining to natural medicine has been time tested, it is best that you resort to those which have been thoroughly tested and are relatively risk-free.
