Keeping More Aware And In Touch Through Reflection

Tags: , , ,

We go through constant and varied experiences throughout our lives. At times, we may get so distressed because of instances which may have caused us pain or sadness. But there are happy moments in the same manner. How do we take these experiences? If we are keen enough, we can learn to look inward, or look deeper.

Take time to think things through, or to feel things through. When we do, we can perhaps come to a few or many realizations. And these realizations can make us bitter or else bring growth and better awareness. These we gain in moments of reflection. If you were asked the question: If you could teach a certain skill, what would it be? In the academic or business setting, coaches might reply with active listening, or asking good questions.

In other arenas, mentors would often think of teaching related skills for better output or performance. But our functionality or productivity as individuals does not come with a push of a button. To be able to be productive on the outside, it is often a necessity that what we are inside is resolved.

It means that whatever inner conflicts we have have been sorted out. To be a better person, we ought to be able to have come to terms with ourselves. Reflection can bring this about. Reflection may mean taking time to look at the present, or reminiscing the past. Or else looking forward to the future.

It is listening to yourself- what you want, what you’ve learned, what you need to let go of. Or more importantly, what you should do. No two persons have ever gone through the same experiences. There are varied and distinct blueprints for every individual person. We can seek outside counsel or guidance for certain dilemmas or instances we may go through.

These can prove to be helpful. But more importantly, we also have to listen to ourselves. This we can do during moments of reflection. These moments of looking inward can bring us surprising, or even sudden growth or change. Change is constant, and so must growth be. For change and growth to serve their true purpose, we ought be able to reflect on instances or lessons meant to bring these about.

Thus, even when instigators of growth and change are drastic or distressing, the impact would not be so overwhelming. We can learn to cope and acknowledge rather than get shaken. Moments of reflection mean being still and listening to yourself. Often, it is done in solitude, far from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind.

Time and times of being alone can make us to reflect. Others may think this as idleness and a total waste of time. But nourishing our inner self and inward growth is as necessary as growing in outward skills and requirements. In fact, we even have to first work on what is within us to be able to function optimally on the outside.

To quote from Albert Einstein: “Without reflection, one knows from daily life that one exists for other people”. Without reflection, we would drown in the outward noise of daily stresses and struggles. Until we get lost and lose ourselves. But in reflection, we become clear to ourselves, and we are able to define who and what we really are, or what we truly want.
