Society generally imposes different standards for men and women. This can put strain on both sexes, especially on certain issues or modes of coping. For instance, concerns relating to health and the emotions. It is more acceptable for women to disclose their emotions, or weaknesses in that area for that matter.
But men, they revolve in a different scenario. Men are driven to compete and succeed, and it can be awkward for them to expose their vulnerabilities. The brawny of the genders is expected to be strong. So when emotional issues beset them, they tend to keep it to themselves. Or they may even choose to ignore the problem.

 Kept or not, however, emotional issues are real for both men and women. When it comes to emotional issues, depression is taken into the picture. Others may have the notion that depression is predominantly a “woman” thing, but the fact is, depression in men is as real. But in today’s setting depression in men is more often a topic lightly tackled.
Misconceptions then arise- that men fail to recognize symptoms of depression and that they are apt not to seek treatment. So what separates depression in men from depression in women? It primarily has to do with how men having a different mindset. Competition and success are often considered as manly pursuits.
The testosterone- driven gender is likely to get so engrossed in attaining outward or physical achievement. Men often dwell on the notion that they should rely on themselves. Thus, it is unlikely for them to discuss their emotions or feelings, or when they are depressed. That’s why depression in men oftentimes goes unnoticed.
It’s because men tend not to show their weaknesses. And this is when identifying the problem becomes a bit difficult. There are many causes why a man gets depressed. Those married or in a relationship may experience issues with their partners, and this could lead to depression. And more so for those separated or divorced.
This makes a man susceptible to depression. And then there is fertility or sexual health issues- another major cause of depression in men. Work or career provides a sense of fulfillment and esteem in men. When they fail in this regard, depression can set in. Then pregnancy on their partners’ behalf.
Changes during pregnancy or childbirth often brings about lesser sexual activity for the couple, or lesser time spent for each other all in all. So what are telltale signs of male depression? Feelings of hopelessness, hostility or anger could prevail. Lack or loss of sleep, or loss of interest in former activities may also indicate a problem.
A man may have difficulty performing at work, or else lose appetite. Significant weight loss could take place. Libido problems can occur, specifically loss of sex drive. A man may also begin to act aggressively or become irritable. How is it for a man to break the cycle? It primarily starts with him helping himself.
If a man happens to be undergoing a major loss or change in his life, he should take time venting his emotions healthily. Having a good talk with a trusted friend, partner or professional would be helpful. Keeping busy with interesting hobbies or activities can divert his attention from distress.
Relaxation techniques such as exercise, yoga or meditation can be effective ways of coping. Rather than coping through addictive or toxic substances such as drugs or alcohol, he must make means to eat and live healthily. To ease concerns about confidentiality, a man can discuss the issue (freely) with his doctor.
Real courage comes from acknowledging the truth and doing something about it rather than being in denial which ends up to be destructive.
