Getting A Grip On Anxiety Disoders

Tags: , , ,

2007-07-16There has been an increasing trend in the occurrence of anxiety disorders as over $46 billion or 30% of US expenditures is accounted for psychiatric illnesses annually indicating the prevalence of such conditions. Anxiety disorders are of different categories such as panic disorders, post-traumatic stress syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorders, phobias and generalized anxiety disorder and they are more likely to affect women than men.

Panic disorders involve symptoms of recurrent episodes of intense fear with physical manifestations of chest pains and heart palpitations, abdominal distress, shortness of breath and dizziness. Psychological symptoms include feelings of unreality and fear of dying. Those suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSS) generally experience anxiety, concentration problems, sleeplessness and nightmares as a result of a tragedy or a traumatic experience.

Individuals suffering from social phobias are often introverted and avoid social situations. Those who are afflicted with obsessive-compulsive disorders on the other hand are characterized by recurring, unwanted and uncontrollable thoughts and ritual-like compulsions such as checking the water faucet repeatedly. As more and more individuals become afflicted with anxiety disorders, it is essential that there be more information dissemination so as to invoke awareness to those afflicted and their households.

Anxiety disorders are potentially debilitating and may inhibit an individual’s functionality. As such, proper treatment measures must be administered so as to be able to manage the condition and for the individual to be able to enjoy a better quality of life. Cognitive therapy is one of the foremost means to treat anxiety disorders wherein there is a deconstruction and reconstruction of an individual’s cognitive processes.

For a better administration of treating anxiety disorders with this measure, however, an individual may need the aid of medications to control the manifestations of the condition. Such medications will help stave off anxiety disorders and allow time for cognitive therapy treatment. Aside from prescription drugs, those with anxiety disorders can also opt to take alternative healing methods in managing the symptoms of the condition.

Anxiety disorders can be managed through alternative therapy approaches such as ayurveda, aromatherapy and the like or with the aid of natural supplements. Aromatherapy can be very effective in calming down the emotions and putting an individual in a better frame of mind and being. Treatment of anxiety disorders with natural supplements on the other hand does not entail the occurrence of side effects.

Such alternative healing modalities for anxiety disorders are generally not endorsed by conventional medicine, but still, due to their safety and effectivity, a majority of individuals resort to them. Alternative healing methods may be effective in alleviating the onslaught of anxiety disorders, but it does not necessarily mean that those afflicted with the disorder are completely healed.

Anxiety disorders, to be thoroughly dealt with must be addressed with intensive therapy so as to make the individual face the underlying issues that instigate the onset of the symptoms.
