There are individuals who may have gone through familial violence, neglect and sexual abuse as children. Such individuals have the higher likelihood of developing mental and psychological disorders and one of the potential mental illnesses that they could suffer from is borderline personality disorder. Statistics have indicated that borderline personality disorder is more prevalent among women than men.
Such case can be attributed to the fact that female children are more susceptible to abuse than male children or it could be that females are more likely to seek treatment than men do. An individual, when afflicted with borderline personality disorder can suffer from repercussions as to how they deal with the society, their immediate relationships and well as with themselves.
The manifestations of borderline personality disorder are often apparent in an individual’s relationships, moods and self-image. Borderline personality disorder often causes an individual to be highly critical about themselves, have unstable moods and puts them in a greater predilection to be highly impulsive. Relationships are severely affected by borderline personality disorder as well as the sufferer tends to develop the fear of being abandoned.
As a consequence, those fraught with the dilemma of a borderline personality disorder would often attach themselves quickly to other people and has the compulsion to be involved in other people’s lives and yet feel helpless, needy and co-dependent. In borderline personality disorder, if the sufferer becomes overwhelmed by their fear of abandonment, they have the tendency to drive people out of their lives to compensate for their fear of rejection.
Such is basically the beginning of a vicious cycle in which an individual suffering from borderline personality disorder can be entangled with. They drive people away and then do everything in their power to get them back again until they feel helpless and needy again. Due to this fact, those beset with borderline personality disorder are unable to sustain healthy relationships.
As an individual with borderline personality disorder can be difficult to live with, the sufferer would then feel worthless, needy and unloved once they are abandoned due to their eccentricity. More so, an individual with borderline personality disorder is beset with distorted beliefs about themselves being worthless and unwanted. Such is the gripping perennial cycle in which those with borderline personality disorder struggle to break free from.
Therapy and treatment for borderline personality disorder is often long term as the condition is more apt to beset individuals for a significant amount of time. With thorough and intensive supervision from a competent professional and with the cooperation of the patient added with family and peer support, the chains of borderline personality disorder can be taken apart until one is able to enjoy the liberty of a sound mind and healthy relationships.
