Contending With Emotional Abuse

Tags: , , ,

Emotional abuse has long been a prevalent social, marital and personal issue. When a spouse or child or any household member for that matter is always yelled at at home and is constantly being put down, then that it emotional abuse. Calling somebody names and subjecting them to humiliation is also an emotional form of abuse.

Apparently, emotional abuse renders its victims emotionally undermined, and this can cause a breakdown of their self-esteem. An emotional abuser, as much as they tend to victimize others may be nothing more than emotionally abused individual themselves who serve to perpetuate the cycle. Often, the case is that an emotionally abused child will grow up to be an emotional abuser as well.

They would tend to pass on to their children the same manner of treatment that was inflicted on them as children. Emotional abusers may also be bullies in school trying to intimidate and terrorize other children and the case can be that these bullies are emotionally abused themselves in their homes.

Emotional abusers evidently have so many personal issues to contend with, and often they are psychological and emotional in nature. Individuals inflicting emotional abuse on others have the compulsion, or even the rage to break down others’ will and self-esteem. It could be that the abusers have low self-esteem themselves and they want to impose their dominance on to others which is a manifestation of their insecurity.

Having been emotionally abused, these abusers can also be harboring hatred, and this hatred they also project on to others. Such is why emotional abuse has to be contended with as it can be a perpetuating and endless cycle. Emotional abuse can be dealt with by primarily setting the issues straight with the abuser.

Whatever emotional conflicts that emotional abusers are harboring should be sorted out and healed so that they would cease to wreak emotional abuse to others as well. By no doubt, a victim of emotional abuse, other than turning out to be an abuser, can also suffer from lifelong trauma. Emotional abuse inflicts emotional wounds, and an individual’s emotions play a crucial role in their personality, their social functioning as well as their well being.

Being a victim of emotional abuse can render one hopeless as it enervates their self-esteem. Mental and emotional health is vital for a good quality of life, but when abuse strips one of mental and emotional well-being, it can lead to depression. Often, the case is that emotional abuse can result to its victims having suicidal thoughts, and what remains inauspicious is that these suicidal thoughts might be actualized.

For both instigators and victims of emotional abuse, peer, familial and professional help should be rendered. Often, this is carried out through group therapy, family therapy or individual therapy and counseling. An individual’s emotional make up is a delicate aspect of their personality and once this is ravaged by emotional abuse, tremendous damage can be done.

The wounds of emotional abuse may not be visible, but they can be far more too painful and difficult to heal.
