There are studies citing that narcissistic personality disorder affects a vast number of the total population- about 1% of it. But still others assert that the number is lower than that. The real cause of narcissistic personality disorder is also vague. There are those who say that narcissistic personality disorder is a developmental disorder.
This developmental disorder is said to result from some childhood trauma. Some thoughts though cite that narcissistic personality disorder is a learned behavior and that it has no clinical basis. If narcissistic personality disorder is psychological in nature, then there can be hope for treatment. Therapy and other treatment measures can help the narcissist relearn their behavior.

But if narcissistic personality disorder has no clinical basis or is not a psychological issue, then not much can be done about it for treatment. Narcissistic personality disorder can cause so much of a havoc. Narcissistic personality disorder causes a person to have an inflated self-esteem. A narcissist has in fact a grandiose perception of themselves.
They may not even think that they are suffering from narcissistic personality disorder. They may not acknowledge that they have a problem with themselves. Such is why a person with this personality disorder is not likely to seek professional help. Narcissistic personality disorder can cause a person to have problems with their relationships and their work.
When a person has this personality disorder, they may not be able to sustain a healthy relationship. They will have problems with being productive. Functioning in work or school will then have irregularities. A narcissist is deluded in that they believe they will have an unending opportunity for wealth and fame.
They also believe that they have so many friends. Those with narcissistic personality disorder believe that they have a grand life. When the reality of the situation intrudes, they will react offensively. They also have the tendency to blame others for anything negative that happens in their lives. A person with narcissistic personality disorder lives according to their delusions.
They are not in touch with the reality of their situation. What seems to be aggravating with narcissistic personality disorder is that it causes a heavy burden to those living with the narcissist. It can be very difficult living with a narcissist. They can be very insensitive to the point of being cruel.
Those seeking help for narcissistic personality disorder have slow progress, if any. It may actually take years for progress to manifest for a narcissist seeking treatment. Health insurance companies have different policies for coverage of this personality disorder. For the length of time needed for treatment, though, an out of pocket expense may be necessary.
If narcissistic personality disorder is psychological in nature, then perhaps there is hope for treatment. The behavior can be relearned to become something which is more socially acceptable. There is yet much vagueness with narcissistic personality disorder. Advancements in knowledge of the human psychology can only offer hope to those fraught with this personality disorder.
Not only for the narcissist themselves, but to their families as well. The same can be said for all the other people having a relationship with them of any sort.
