Why “essential” Amino Acids Are Called So

Tags: , , ,

Good nutrition is basically indispensable when it comes to attaining overall health. By good nutrition, it may seem very elementary that it has to do with keeping to a well-balanced diet. Such a notion still stands true, however, certain changes in food harvesting and processing and a list of other factors have caused a depletion of nutrients from the basic and staple foods that the majority eats which is why dietary supplementation has become a necessity.

Dietary supplements are well what they are- supplements- and they augment an individual’s nutrient intake as the diet alone may not suffice. Some of the essential nutrients needed by the body that indeed lives up to its name and ought to be obtained from the diet and dietary supplements are essential amino acids.

There are generally two kinds of amino acids which are vital for human health and they are essential and non- essential amino acids. Whether essential or non- essential amino acids though, both are equally important. The two are mainly distinguished in that non- essential amino acids are produced by the body and may need not be taken from dietary supplementation.

Essential and non- essential amino acids have been commonly known as the building blocks of life as they function as the body’s protein builders. Essential and non- essential amino acids are regarded as principal elements needed by the body given that second to water, protein is the most common substance within the human physiology.

It is crucial that an individual has ample intake of foods rich in essential amino acids as protein is found in the skin, muscles, bones, cartilage and blood. Fish, meat and poultry, called complete protein foods are those which contain approximately equal amounts of all the essential amino acids whereas vegetables, fruits and grains are called otherwise- incomplete proteins- as they merely contain some essential amino acids and not all of them.

One must have adequate consumption of such foods and with the augmentation of dietary supplements as a deficiency in essential amino acids can result to an imbalance in the body and there is a greater likelihood that depression, obesity, nausea and a range of other conditions will develop. A deficiency in essential amino acids cannot be attributed to the diet alone as other factors such as stress, aging and infections can interfere with the amino acids’ functioning.

For a majority however, essential amino acids are obtained from a healthy diet, and to ensure that there is adequate supply of the nutrient within the body, dietary supplementation may be necessitated. When aiming to get the best out of a dietary supplement for essential amino acids, one must take a good look at the label and see if the content includes Lysine, Leucine and Isoleucine, Phenylalanine, Methionine, Tryptophan, Valine and Threonine.

Non- essential amino acids on the other hand are arginine, alanine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, cystine, praline, glycine, tyrosine and serine. As mentioned earlier, non- essential amino acids are not dietary and are produced by the body on its own. It is just good sense that one takes measures to have sufficient essential amino acids intake and supply as such nutrients build and repair muscle tissues and produce chemicals that promote better brain functioning.
