Tags: , ,

Vitamins and minerals. It may sound at all prudish when one constantly prods others to take sufficient amounts of them. But what are we without vitamins and minerals. It would basically be a state of almost non-existence at all. Vitamins and minerals are what keep the body functioning efficiently. They are vital to proper development and they sustain the body’s physiological processes. Such is why vitamins and minerals should be consumed sufficiently. That is, through the diet with the augmentation of health supplements. So it is with . Vitamin B12 is one of the most essential nutrients needed by the body.

It is also known as cobalamin, and it helps to keep the body in good shape. Meat, eggs and fish have high levels of vitamin B12, and apparently they are good sources of the vitamin. In general, the body needs vitamin B12 in small amounts. Nevertheless, the vitamin has to be taken in daily. The human body synthesizes vitamin B12 through an intrinsic factor in the stomach. The body may have too much intake of this vitamin, but it may not cause so much of a problem. Only half of the amount of the consumed vitamin B12 is absorbed by the human body.

The vitamin can be reused by the human body as well. ’s health benefits? There are four which are deemed as most crucial. For one thing, the vitamin is essential in helping the body convert proteins, fat and carbohydrates into energy. The said vitamin is also vital in boosting the white blood cells. It goes without saying then that vitamin B12 strengthens the immune system and helps ward off diseases. Vitamin B12 also keeps the red blood cells healthy. In this sense, this vitamin is also essential in preventing heart disease. With sufficient vitamin B12 in the body, a protective shield is formed around the nerve cells.

This is especially crucial and helpful to the brain. In the absence of this protective shield and when it is not sustained, a brain malfunction can occur. With insufficient vitamin B12 levels in the body, anemia can result. This is so because there is a reduction of red blood cells in the body. Children who do not have sufficient intake of the vitamin are apt to suffer from anemia. Anemia can result as well when the body lacks the intrinsic factor needed in the vitamin’s absorption. Vegetarians need to augment their vitamin B12 intake through dietary supplements. Their nature of the vegetarian diet is apparently lacking in supplying the body with the vitamin.

The same can be said with pregnant women. They need ample vitamin B12 through the diet and health supplements. Such is essential for the baby’s healthy growth and development in the womb. And aging individuals, they need vitamin B12 supplements. This is so as they have diminished absorption in the body due to aging. Individuals aging 50 and above need ample amounts of this vitamin through the diet and supplementation. This would significantly reduce their chances of developing anemia as well as other health conditions.
