Unlocking What’s Behind Vitamin D Deficiency

Tags: , , ,

Vitamin deficiency in the body poses tremendous significant health threats as such nutrients perform crucial functions in supporting and maintaining overall health. Such is why it is essential that one gets adequate vitamin nourishment and most often it requires the augmentation of health supplements. The current setting imposes upon the majority to keep to misguided dietary habits, and so vitamin deficiency diseases have become prevalent.

The same can be said with vitamin D deficiency. Just like any other forms of vitamin deficiencies in the body, vitamin D deficiency can beset an individual with precarious health consequences. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to the development of certain cancers, tumors and osteoporosis. The predominance of vitamin D deficiency can be attributed to several factors.

Other than insufficient nourishment of the vitamin from the diet, the synthesis of vitamin D involves exposure to the sunlight, thus, those not in the habit of bathing themselves with healthy amounts of the sun’s rays are put to the peril of suffering from vitamin D deficiency and its associated diseases.

Countless surveys have indicated that vitamin D deficiency is a global health dilemma. It affects both men and women in astounding numbers worldwide. If the body suffers from vitamin D deficiency, it will not be able to absorb calcium, thus leading to a calcium deficiency whose primary health consequence is osteoporosis.

So there goes an unlocked obscurity. Rather than putting the blame on calcium deficiency alone for osteoporosis, one must make means to ward of vitamin D deficiency as it can be the main, underlying precursor to the condition. On the other hand, having normal levels of vitamin D in the body has been known to prevent the development of malignant tumors in the colon, the breasts, the ovaries and the prostate.

On the contrary, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with high incidence of cancers of the digestive system most prevalently among men. As vitamin D is generated by the skin through sun exposure, the best means to stimulate the body to have adequate supply of vitamin D is just that- sun exposure.

Apparently, no supplement can take the place of sun exposure which is why those living in countries situated far from the equator are more apt to suffer from vitamin D deficiency. A large number of the population in countries like Canada, Great Britain and the United States are beset with vitamin D deficiency as the populace living in such countries need longer sun exposure.

According to statistics, 40% of the general population in the United States suffer from vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency is a primary health concern in Great Britain as well as it affects a majority of the adult population. In the same manner, skin pigmentation is linked with vitamin D deficiency.

Those with dark skin pigmentation are more prone to develop vitamin D deficiency as they need 20 times of the amount of sun exposure compared to those with lighter skin. It may not be surprising then why there is an epidemic of prostate cancer among men of African descent.
