Sensing Danger In Obesity Statistics

Tags: , , ,

2007-05-07The “superpowers” that is in major nations with major health issues are faced with obesity statistics that have evolved into clear and present danger. With recent studies and corresponding results presenting a grim picture courtesy of these obesity statistics, this global problem was observed to have dramatically increased regardless of age, gender, economic status and race.

In the past decade alone, countries hailed for health policies such as the United States, Canada and England disclosed disturbing figures on rising obesity here. A health condition marked with abnormally high proportion of body fat, obesity and obesity statistics that trails closeby has put the lives of millions at risk and potential patients of diabetes, hypertension, osteoarthritis and sleep apnea.

Tracking obesity is primarily based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) where an identified cutoff point serves as the guide to determine whether you are overweight or obese or facing threat to be in either classification. Obesity statistics reflect various factors related to the disease such as adult obesity, childhood obesity, eating habits, the prevalence of hypertension (high-blood pressure) in obese people, the occurrence of other related diseases like high-blood cholesterol, gallbladder and cardiovascular disease, and cancer, also the cost of obesity, the rate of change of obesity prevalence over the years, the number of physically active individuals in the population, and the morbidity of obesity statistics.

In general, various obesity statistics taken all together showed that the prevalence of the obesity condition in the United States ranks higher that that of its prevalence in the developing nations, while also leading the other developed countries in acquiring the disease. Obesity statistics tell us for instance that nearly one-third of the US population are obese, 30.5%/ 61.3-million men and women.

The prevalence of ‘overweight’ for children and adolescents is increasing too where approximately 15.3% of children ages 6–11 and 15.5% of adolescents ages 12–19 were overweight, and an additional 15% of children and 14.9% of adolescents at risk for overweight. Obesity statistics also show an increase in mortality rate associated with obesity as obese individuals have a 50 to an ultimate 100% increased risk of death from all causes.

Even those moderately obese people have their life expectancy shortened by 2 to 5 years. Obesity statistics also tells us that obesity gets more prevalent as one ages. About 28% of men and 27% of women aged 16-24 are obese in the world alongside about 76% of men and 68% of women between 55 and 64 of ages who are also in the obese category.

Alarming, said the American National Center for Health statistics, given the comparative study that between 1962 and 2000, the number of obese people in the America was disturbingly up from 13% to 31%. Current obesity statistics are even grimmer with some 63% of Americans overweight. England is equally disturbing too with an estimated 46% of men and 32% of women overweight and 17% of men and 21% of women obese.

Two decades back the figures has risen twice. United Kingdom for its part has grimmer obesity statistics too where in a 2002 report, 13% of 8 year olds and 17% of 15 year olds are obese. That is danger sensed with these obesity statistics disclosed. Lurking in many homes and many nations.
