Those within the limits of a sound mind and well-being certainly does not like the word pain. Upon recognition of the word, that gnawing sensation that rots the innermost recesses of the being that one experiences from time to time are brought to mind. Pain is basically an inherent aspect of living, whether it be in its physical or emotional form.

Nevertheless, it is certainly an unpleasant personal experience which is confined within the sufferer himself. In the scientific medical arena, pain is described as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with tissue damage. Pain management is the discipline in which pain relief is dealt with. Under this discipline, pain relief can be employed by medications under the supervision of a trained physician.

Pain relief is generally approached in a multidisciplinary perspective. It may involve the use of analgesics and narcotics as well as interventional procedures such as physical therapy. Pain relief may also be implemented with psychological measures such as biofeedback and cognitive therapy. Pain is generally of two categories: acute and chronic.

By acute pain, it means that which is a result of a trauma and is often reversible and can be corrected by treating the underlying problem. Pain which is often short duration severe spasms generally characterize acute pain. Chronic pain is the contrary on the other hand. Pain relief for chronic pain may require more thorough and intensive measures as it is generally harder to diagnose and cure and may take a longer time to reverse.

Chronic pain is generally those which are inherent with cancer, neuropathy and referred pain. In such cases, pain is regarded as a symptom of the disease, therefore pain relief is dealt with separately. When pain is regarded as a symptom of a disease, it is generally considered as the fifth vital sign, that is, which is ensuing after the other manifestations of the disease.

Pain relief and management is basically central in medical care and has necessitated the focus of medical professionals and nursing personnel. Cancers, tumors and serious accidents are the main concerns of pain relief and management. Nurses, health care providers and pain management practitioners are the personnel held responsible in educating the patients on the assessment and management of pain relief in their respective cases.

Within the coverage of pain relief and management professionals are fellowship trained physicians such as anesthesiologists, neurologists and psychiatrists. These trained professionals have the proficiency in dealing with pain management in a multidisciplinary approach such as with the use of interventional methods, cognitive therapy or with the use of pharmacological agents.

Through rigorous training and education, such trained professionals have gained expertise in pain relief and management and the use of pharmacological pain relief measures that entails the use of drugs. Interventional measures are utilized by these professionals as well in managing and relieving pain. Pain relief and management is by no doubt elemental in medical care as measures taken under this discipline are essential in easing the distress of those beset by unbearable conditions.
