When Rotator Cuff Surgery Is Necessary

Tags: , , ,

The thought of having a surgery may send one into a whirl of panic. It is largely dependent on the nature of the surgery, though. But often, the idea of being sliced open does not sound at all appealing. After all, a surgery is an invasive procedure, and some may be wary of its risks.

But there are cases, countless in fact, when surgery is necessary. For instance, rotator cuff surgery. Apparently, a rotator cuff surgery is a procedure carried out to address rotator cuff injuries. But as rotator cuff injuries vary in nature and severity, there are several treatment options as well. Some may require rotator cuff surgery, and the others do not.

So when is rotator cuff surgery necessitated, and when is it not? If one experiences a great deal of pain in the shoulders, it’s likely that one of their four shoulder muscles is injured. This may have happened due to several reasons. For an athlete who throws balls everyday, the condition may have developed over time.

Such a case falls under the category of chronic injuries. There may also be instances when the pain is a result of a one time incident, such as landing or falling on one arm. This, in turn, is one of the acute injuries on the shoulders. Treatment options for either of the sort of injuries vary on their severity.

It is generally the severity of the injury which dictates whether one needs a rotator cuff surgery. For rotator cuffs that aren’t torn, rotator cuff surgery is not a viable option. If the rotator cuff is not torn, but merely injured and inflamed, then that is called an impingement. The good news is, an impingement does not require a rotator cuff surgery.

In fact, it does not require any treatment at all as it will eventually heal on its own. It does however take time and doctors often recommend muscle relaxants or anti-inflammatory medications to facilitate in healing. In such a case, a rotator cuff surgery is out of the question. But torn rotator cuffs, they need rotator cuff surgery.

If left untreated, a torn rotator cuff can worsen over time. It will only lead to much pain and discomfort, and even more so, arthritis. It is necessary then for one to undergo rotator cuff surgery. When it comes to a torn rotator cuff which needs a rotator cuff surgery, a thorough diagnosis is entailed.

An individual cannot at all diagnose a rotator cuff injury by themselves. In fact, even the doctor cannot tell right away whether one needs a rotator cuff surgery merely through a physical exam. To obtain an accurate diagnosis and to determine the extent of the injury, the doctor needs to perform an anthrogram.

It is then that the doctor can determine whether the rotator cuff has a true tear which calls for a rotator cuff surgery. A rotator cuff surgery need not cause much concern however. A rotator cuff surgery is done with a local anesthetic and on an out patient basis. As much as one doesn’t like the idea of being cut open, the rotator cuff surgery is however the most straightforward means to relieve pain and restore mobility.
