Shoulder Pain? What You Need To Know
Tags: , ,

is said to be one of the most common afflictions of the modern time. But there is hope for those often beset with it, ranging from an 8- hour- 5- times- a- week white collar worker or a weekend athlete or even a gardener who merely overdid it. There are actually many ways to make people feel better from shoulder pain. What it basically entails is information and awareness on the nature of shoulder pain as well as the options available for its remedy. The shoulder is regarded as the largest, the most complex and most mobile joint of the body.

Being so, it can be vulnerable to all sorts of misalignments and injuries which contribute to the prevalence of shoulder pain. The rotator cuff which consists of four muscles and their tendons allow movement to the shoulders. The rotator cuff is crucial in stabilizing the arm bone to the shoulder blade and it is the area most often causing shoulder pain when irregularities occur. There are many factors contributing to shoulder pain, but some of them may not necessarily originate from the shoulders. There are three categories as to the causes of true : tendonitis or bursitis, injury or instability and arthritis.

Tendonitis or bursitis is an inflammation of the tendons or the bursae which are small fluid filled sacs. The bursae surround the shoulder joints, and when they become inflamed, it is then that there is an onset of pain on the said joint. Injury or instability leading to shoulder pain can be due to keeping the arms extended over the head or chronic compression such as when forcing the shoulder into its socket. A muscle imbalance apparently results to shoulder pain as well especially if one has weak muscles. This will cause the rotator cuff to not to function properly.

As for shoulder pain which arises from another underlying condition, it can be due to neck arthritis, chest diseases such as pneumonia and abdominal diseases like gall bladder problems. For women, shoulder pain can manifest due to an ectopic pregnancy. Pain on the left shoulder may also be a symptom of heart diseases. Then there is “horner’s syndrome” which can be a symptom of lung cancer. In “horner’s syndrome” the shoulder pain is accompanied by an enlarged pupil on the same side of the body in which the pain developed. Under these circumstances, the pain needs to be thoroughly evaluated by a physician through a physical exam.

Helpful measures to relieve or reverse shoulder pain include limiting overhead reaches and avoiding repetitive motion. Other than that, one should also carry out proper posturing and work on rotator cuff strengthening. For those who are bound to a wheelchair, tucking the arms closer to the body when pushing can help ward off shoulder pain.
