Tags: , , ,

Why does an individual need to undergo knee replacement surgery? Knee replacement surgery is otherwise known as total knee joint arthroplasty. This procedure is one of the most performed operations all throughout the world. Nearly 200,00 knee replacement surgeries are carried out annually in the United States alone. With the trend in medical tourism, many patients from the United States and UK go to India to avail of lesser expenses for knee replacement yet with equally efficient medical services.

The procedure is used to address knee problems with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Such joint conditions generally cause a wearing and tearing down of the knee joint. When performing a total knee replacement procedure, the doctor cuts away damaged bones and cartilage from the kneecap, thigh bone and shinbone. It is then that they are replaced with an artificial joint or a knee prosthesis.

In cases of excessive activity following the procedure though, the knee implant may eventually wear down and loosen.

It is then that the knee implant may need to be replaced. Generally though, knee implants remain functional for a period of 10 to 15 years subsequent to the surgery. With moderate activity, the knee implants are expected to function for another 15 years or so. As for infections and complications which may relate to the knee replacement procedure, they are rare.

At highly reduced costs for knee replacement, one can nevertheless avail of services from state of the art hospitals. The same goes for highly trained and capable medical experts. As one is able to save a considerable amount, they are able to enjoy other benefits.

Other than getting a big cost of savings for the replacement, one can also enjoy a holiday in a country with a huge variety of tourist destinations. As for the cost, knee replacement surgery in India ranges from $6,000 - $7,000.

That’s a stark economical cost in comparison to total knee replacement costs of $40,000 in the US and the UK. There are of course disadvantages with medical tourism.
