Life Skills And Occupational Therapy

Tags: , , ,

Think for a moment and imagine how it would be if you were idle for the rest of your life. What would probably come into mind is the drudgery and the monotony you would be experiencing. Other than that, you can probably visualize yourself struggling from the nothingness that binds you.

You wake up everyday not anticipating anything, and you go to sleep at night with no significant memory of the day behind. That’s how it is when you have no goal to live for, or any objective, even just for the day to apply your skills and your productivity. This can be the underlying principle behind occupational therapy.

What exactly is it? By occupational therapy, it means an allied field of health care which is concerned with human occupation in its broadest sense. The philosophy of occupational therapy lies in the concept that all individuals have an intrinsic motivation to be active and to express themselves through activities and occupations.

That occupations give individuals a sense of identity and give them an inherent place in the society is well understood by occupational therapy. Is it not true that your role, whether you are a parent, a child, a boss, an employee or a student, gives you a sense of purpose and that living up to what is expected of you gives you a sense of fulfillment? Through your life choices, whatever they may be, you are able to gain personal growth and a sense of direction.

Think, for instance, of the range of activities that you do all week. Are they not related to your life roles and choice of occupations? Precisely they are, and this is what occupational therapy is concerned about. Whatever occupations and activities we engage in are meaningful to us as they give us the drive to fulfill our roles and others’ expectation of us.

It is basically an inherent need for a human to have something to strive for, a purpose which would serve to fuel their zest for living. Occupational therapy well embraces this knowledge. One of the basic tenets of occupational therapy is that activities and routines serve as an avenue for individuals to develop their skills and their identity and as an outlet by which they can apply their functionality.

Occupational therapy is mindful of the fact that individuals need opportunities for them to cultivate their sense of self and personality. Such is why occupational therapy helps individuals whose usual and essential routines and activities have been disrupted due to an illness, excessive stress or social problems. Within the scope of occupational therapy are health professionals such as radiographers, podiatrists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists.

These health professionals working under the coverage of occupational therapy aid individuals achieving as much as they can for themselves and to actualize their full potential. Occupational therapy practitioners offer a wide range of services ranging from helping people get dressed when they are unable to do so to having a shower.

Other than such trivial matters, individuals who need support when socializing or working or in mustering confidence for a presentation or going out into the community are also some of the concerns of occupational therapy. Indeed, occupational therapy services deliver multi-faceted rewards to individuals who are in search of means to make living driven and worthwhile.
