Smoking Children Due To Second Hand Smoke

Tags: , , ,

The most disheartening fact pertaining to smoking is that it does not only harm the smoker, but those within the immediate surroundings as well. Metaphorically speaking, when somebody is in the habit of smoking in the house or in an enclosed public place, they are basically digging their own graves while taking somebody with them.

Despite rampant awareness campaigns, however, the statistics about smoking remain alarming as habitual and addicted smokers choose to be oblivious to the threatening consequences of smoking to their health and that of their loved ones who are exposed to second hand smoke. Further statistics indicate that 42% of children live in homes where a family member smokes and such children are basically smoking themselves as they inhale the toxins and harmful substances found in second hand smoke.

Although 60% of smokers admit that they disapprove of smoking in a car or room with a child present, 25% of them still do so anyway. From these numbers, one can certainly derive that the dangers of smoking are proliferated owing to the prevalence of the dilemma of individuals, especially children who are exposed to second hand smoke.

The most disturbing fact about second hand smoke is that it contains tar, poisonous gases and a host of toxic chemicals with a number reaching thousands. Apparently, household members and children are open to such dangerous elements by inhaling second hand smoke. Children are more prone to suffer detrimental health risks due to second hand smoke owing to the fact that their bodies are more sensitive as they are still in the process of developing.

It is absolutely unsafe for children to be in the same room where a smoker or smokers are. Even if smoke in the room is not visible with somebody smoking, parents and those concerned should take into account that 85% of second hand smoke is both odorless and invisible. Findings obtained from studies concerning second hand smoke are frightening.

From such data, it has been indicated that babies and children constantly exposed to second hand smoke are twice as likely to acquire asthma and chest infections. Other than that, exposed infants are also put to considerable risks of needing hospital care during their first year. Children incidentally breathing in second hand smoke are also more apt to miss school due to being often ill as they are more susceptible to coughs and colds.

Parents who get their children involved in the dangers of smoking also put them at significantly higher risks of cot death than children of non-smoking parents. Second hand smoke heightens the chances of children developing meningitis as well. Smokers should well think twice about the havoc instigated by doing their habit indoors as partial deafness due to a condition known as “glue ears” can beset their children due to second hand smoke.

As obvious, parents should refrain from smoking inside the house or car and tell smoking guests that the house is a smoke-free zone to protect their children from second hand smoke. Furthermore, they should also avoid exposing children to enclosed areas where there are more likely to be smokers.
