Is there any good with smoking? None, undoubtedly despite its perceived glamour and relaxation benefits. Smoking is a habit with deadly consequences. What’s more, the havoc it instigates goes beyond smokers themselves. With passive smoking, smokers drag others into their graves as well. Governments have acknowledged this fact. So they have imposed a smoking ban.
Many countries enforced laws on a smoking ban. Along with this move, conflicting reactions have risen. The general populace may have a positive reaction towards the smoking ban. But there is an opposite reaction to it- mostly coming from business groups. It is estimated that 1,000 people die every year due to passive smoking.

Passive smoking is inadvertently done by non-smokers. Passive smoke is what non-smokers acquire as they are exposed to an environment with smokers. As for former smokers, they face twice the risk for contracting respiratory conditions. This is seen as a result of passive smoking. Children regularly exposed to passive smoke are three times at higher risk for developing lung cancer.
These are statistics about passive smoking that even smokers are well aware of. But another sort of statistics emerged following the smoking ban implementation in many places. And this is termed as the smoking ban statistics. Smoking ban statistics talk of the smoking ban effects which arose due to the smoking bans.
Like for instance, statistics in North America. North America is perhaps the area with the largest number of smokers. Smoking ban statistics in one of its states, New York is quite startling. A New York post survey cited that as much as 50% decline in bars and restaurant businesses occurred in the wake of the smoking ban.
This decline have in turn sparked lay offs. Along with it, several establishments were put to the brink of a closure. The smoking ban has caused irreparable harm to the Empire State Restaurant and Tavern Association. Some have reported a 50% loss in their businesses. Bar owners and managers stated that business is off by 40%.
This led to them having to lay off some employees. Noise complaints have also risen following the smoking ban. Pub denizens have taken to smoking in the sidewalk. And they are intoxicated and raucous at that. The same can be said with smoking ban statistics in Canada. In Brockville, Eric Stille of the Checkers Diner alleged that his business incurred a 15% loss.
In British Columbia, charitable bingos suffered a drop of $5 million in their businesses. An estimated $8 million worth of losses was experienced by the hospitality industry 80 days after the total smoking ban. Eight hundred lay offs and closure of 9 businesses resulted out of it. The same case with Legion Halls in Edmonton.
It has reported a 30% drop in food and drink sales. A tavern owner, John Laberge was also affected by the smoking ban. He reported that he lost $875 per day since the ban took place. On the whole, the public can only contemplate whether the smoking ban is indeed for good.
