Anybody who has seen them will certainly agree so. But what exactly are skin boils? Skin boils are actually skin abscesses, and they are localized infections deep in the skin. The center of the boil then becomes filled with pus. As they are infections, it goes without saying that prevention of skin boils involve being hygienic.
The same goes for their treatment. There are many kinds of skin boils as well as there are several causes. There are four basic sorts of skin boils however which are deemed to be most prevalent. First, there is cystic acne. This sort of skin boil occurs when oil ducts are clogged and becomes infected.
As it is a form of acne, it commonly manifests on facial skin and is more apt to beset adolescents. Then there is the carbuncle. A carbuncle is a skin boil caused by a bacterium called staphylococcus aurus. Carbuncle skin boils are often accompanied by fevers or chills. Another type of skin boil are pilonidal cysts.
Pilonydal cysts are skin boils which usually form on the crease of the buttocks. Pilonydal cysts begin as tiny hair follicle infections which are aggravated by direct pressure from sitting. This sort of skin boil often forms after a long trip, following prolonged sitting. Hidradenitis suppurativa on the other hand are multiple skin boils which form in the armpits or groin.
These skin boils are caused by infected sweat glands. Despite being an infection, antibiotics may not be effective for these sort of boils. It is then that surgery may be necessitated to remove the sweat glands and consequently the boils. Skin boils are often caused by bacteria entering the skin.
This can happen once a foreign object such as a splinter becomes lodged in the skin. The same can be said with clogged hair follicles and oil ducts, ingrown hairs and obstructed sweat glands. Home treatments for skin boils can be hot soaks or hot packs. For best results, it is best that the boils are treated as soon as they form.
At times, treatment of skin boils is largely dependent on their causes. In cases of an infection, the doctor may recommend antibiotics. Still, in some cases, the doctor may have to perform a surgical procedure to drain the pus out. It is important that one doesn’t squeeze the skin boils or poke out the pus by themselves.
This can cause the infection to spread and worsen. For the best means to treat skin boils, it is always sensible to see the doctor. This is especially true if the skin boils do not respond to home treatments.
