On Rem Sleep And What It Really Is

Tags: , , ,

REM refers to rapid eye movement. When it comes to REM sleep, this is the sleep stage in which one has them – rapid eye movement. Somebody in their REM sleep would seem like they are looking at things all around the room. Their eyes seem to be moving back and forth.

This is of course from an observer’s perspective. Many may well have heard of this term – REM sleep. But what really is it and what goes on during this stage of sleep? An individual goes through several episodes of REM sleep at night. All throughout the whole night’s sleep, REM sleep is that which is experienced the most.

REM is the stage in sleeping where one dreams the most. When somebody wakes up and remembers a dream, most likely it happened during this stage. REM sleep mostly consists the whole period of the night’s sleep. The REM stage of sleep is manifested by 20% - 25% of the whole sleep duration.

But this stage of sleep does not happen all at once. REM sleep is just one of the stages experienced during sleeping. This is experienced along with other stages of sleep throughout the night. The range of REM sleep varies with age. Babies are said to spend more time sleeping with REM.

But as one grows older and eventually becomes an adult, the length decreases. During adulthood, this stage of sleep is reduced to 20% - 25% of the entire period of sleeping. During the REM sleep, one is said to be in the most active stage of sleeping. During the REM stage, one does not only move their eyes back and forth.

In fact, their heart beats faster as well, and their breathing becomes irregular. More time is spent in REM sleeping the longer an individual sleeps each night. For instance, when sleeping, one may spend 10 minutes in REM. Following this is another stage of sleep. The next REM sleep would then last for more than 10 minutes and so forth.

One should not undermine the value of good sleep. For sleep to be healthy, there must be regular hours and specified length for it. Otherwise one will not have enough time for REM sleep. This goes for other sleep stages, too. One should spend enough time for sleeping. Such is necessary for normal sleep processes to take place.

Dreaming is one way for the mind to express itself. This is instigated during REM sleep. Such is why sleeping is essential for mental health. When one has inadequate sleep or suffers regularly from sleep deprivation, much health havoc can be instigated. Sleep has a magical restoring power for the mind and the body.

One must ensure then that they have adequate amounts of it. This is for REM sleep and for other sleep stages to healthily transpire. As much as the body needs rest, so does the mind. And this rest for the mind comes about when sleeping. One should have adequate sleep for REM sleep and other stages to happen in their required time.

Otherwise they would end up feeling lethargic and worn out the following day.
