Airway Resistance And Sleep Apnea

Tags: , , ,

The current mode of lifestyle generally demands that an individual cut down on sleep. As much as others may think that getting eight hours of regular amount of sleep is unnecessary, such a habit can have health and lifestyle consequences in the long run. Sleep is the body’s natural mechanism for rest and revitalization, and when one is deprived of it, bodily functions may become inefficient, and in fact, the body can even break down.

Sleep deprivation can have detrimental effects of mental functioning thereby having consequences on an individual’s productivity during the daytime. The same can be said with other sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. An estimated 10% of the total population is said to be suffering from sleep apnea, and almost often, this populace is consisted of overweight or obese individuals.

It is apparent that there is a correlation between sleep apnea and obesity. Sleep apnea generally occurs when there is airway resistance, and such a condition is caused by excess fatty accumulation around the abdomen, the chest, the neck and even the nasal passages. This blockage in the airway restricts the ability of the diaphragm and other muscles associated with breathing to move in and out of the lungs.

When there is a manifestation of sleep apnea, an individual generally snores loudly and may stop breathing for a few seconds to a minute. Both adults and children can suffer from this potentially detrimental sleep disorder which occurs during the REM sleep. When an individual drops into the REM sleep, they fall into a rest and relaxation phase of sleeping which is necessary for normal sleep patterns.

Those suffering from sleep apnea is beset by this sleep disorder when they fall into the REM sleep, thus as a consequence, they suffer from irregularities during the daytime such as irritability and difficulty in concentration. Other conditions which are aggravated by this condition are daytime sleepiness and drowsiness. This can wreak havoc on an individual’s normal activities and productivity during the daytime especially when they are working or studying.

Daytime sleepiness or drowsiness caused by sleep apnea can occur when driving as well thus, it can put an individual’s life at risk when driving. When sitting down for an extended period of time, an individual with sleep apnea has the tendency to gradually doze off unexpectedly. It is necessary that sleep apnea be diagnosed and treated accordingly as it can have detrimental and threatening consequences when neglected and aggravated.

A sleep apnea study is generally one of the tests that a person undergoes to determine whether they are indeed suffering from the condition. The primary recommendation for sleep apnea treatment is weight reduction as other treatments are considered to be aggravating and irritating to the sufferer. As much as it may sound very elementary, losing weight is the best means to do away with sleep apnea and other sleep disorders so as to promote better air passage from the lungs.

When addressing the problem of obesity, not only is sleep apnea dealt with but other health conditions as well such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and diabetes. Through exercise and proper dietary habits, weight reduction can be promoted thereby addressing sleep apnea which subsequently results in better sleep, better functioning and productivity and a better quality of life.
