When Sleeping Pills Become A Necessity

Tags: , ,

Many may have the notion that do more harm than good and there can be some sort of basis for such. Although sleeping pills have the capacity to knock one down to sleep, there are those who grow wary of their potential adverse side effects. One of them is dependency, and many have been well aware of that. Another is rebound insomnia as there are sleeping pills which may initially be effective but upon prolonged use, their effects may start to wane and eventually an individual is back to square one in contending with their sleeping disorder. The convenience of sleeping pills has made the commodity of sleep within easy reach, but being pharmaceutical products, they have greater likelihood of having potentially detrimental consequences in the long run.

As there is a significant proportion of individuals suffering from insomnia, sleep deprivation and other sleep disorders, it may seem like the measure of taking sleeping pills has become expedient. Research has shown that a sizeable percentage of the population is beset my occasional bouts of insomnia and that a significant number of them suffer from an ongoing chronic form of insomnia. Sleeping pills may be of help, but it can be merely on a short-term, temporary basis. Initially as a recourse for sleep deprivation or insomnia, doctors would recommend an individual to have modifications in their lifestyle such as changing their diet or exercising regularly.

Behavioral techniques may be inculcated as well as a primary means to address the condition. What has to be taken into account is that is only a last recourse as an insomnia or sleep deprivation treatment measure. So when is sleeping pills as a last resort applied? Certain guidelines have been created by the National Sleep Foundation as a basis upon which sleeping pills will be considered as a necessity for a particular group of individuals. It may be appropriate that an individual takes sleeping pills once the insomniac or any sleep disorder sufferer has refused to adhere to behavioral techniques or if such techniques have not been helpful.

Furthermore, if the irregularity in sleeping patterns has become disruptive of an individual’s daily, normal functioning, then it may be proper that the doctor prescribes sleeping pills. Sleeping pills can be regarded as a short-term necessity for individuals fraught with a trauma or a tragedy, such as the loss of a loved one or highly stressful circumstances such as losing their job. Sleeping pills may also be required when one is suffering from distress-related insomnia or when an individual has been diagnosed with a medical or biological condition in which insomnia has become a manifestation. If an individual is suffering from severe depression and is struggling from uncontrollable emotions, then sleeping pills can be recommended.

The same measure can be applied when an individual may put theirs or others’ lives in jeopardy such as when their sleep disorder causes them to drift off while driving during the daytime. may also be an essential recourse when one has difficulty focusing or concentrating on the tasks at hand relating to a profession owing to insufficient sleep or any other sleep disorder.
