Through Lasik eye surgery, small amounts of corneal tissues are vaporized with an ultraviolet laser. In the recent years, LASIK eye surgery has been gaining a wide popularity as one of the better means of vision correction and more and more Americans now find the procedure affordable. As much as the advent of Lasik eye surgery may have given hope to a majority of those suffering from vision problems, the LASIK procedure is however not suited for everyone.

Foremost, LASIK eye surgery is applicable only for correcting nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism. For those with presbyopia (a condition that requires reading glasses in older patients) Lasik eye surgery may not be applicable. The same is the case for those with vision problems whose corneas are too thin.

Before deciding on undergoing LASIK eye surgery, it may be sensible for the patient to initially have thorough knowledge pertaining to the procedure. Aside from an in-depth and intensive discussion with the ophthalmologist, it may be helpful for a patient deciding to go through Lasik eye surgery to inquire from friends, relatives or colleagues who went through the same procedure about their experiences.

As with any surgical procedure, there may be risks and side effects to contend with subsequent to LASIK eye surgery and a patient may well consider the pro’s and con’s of the whole process. Prior to undergoing Lasik eye surgery, the ophthalmologist generally evaluates the patient’s condition to see if they are a fitting candidate for the procedure.

The surgeon will then map out the corneas to determine in what manner they can reshape them. If there be any problems that may preclude the patient from going through Lasik eye surgery following a thorough evaluation of the patient’s eyes, then LASIK eye surgery may not be considered as a viable option.

If both the patient and the ophthalmologist agree on the eye surgery however, the ophthalmologist will then have a comprehensive discussion of all the risk involved during and after the surgery. LASIK eye surgery is generally an outpatient procedure and the downtime for recovery is minimal. Immediately following surgery, patients are able to see clearly without their contacts and glasses.

As mentioned earlier, however, there are minor drawbacks to contend with consequent to Lasik eye surgery such as sensitivity to light and problems with night vision. As much as Lasik eye surgery is capable of correcting vision problems and the idea may be encouraging to most, the procedure is not suitable for all those with eyesight problems and only fitting candidates can benefit from this sophisticated technology.
