Restoring Normal Vision With A Cataract Surgery

Tags: , , ,

The eyes are two of the vital organs of the human body as it is through them that an individual basks in the glory of seeing the world’s wonders. With aging, however, the eyes’ normal functioning generally degenerates and one may well not be surprised if vision problems start to develop.

Just like other parts of the body, eye processes and functions start to wane and slow down especially for middle-aged and elderly individuals. But with advancements in technology, it is now possible that age-related vision problems can be corrected. One such condition is cataract. The eye’s natural lens is generally made up of water and some protein.

When this protein content within the eyes begins to form small lumps, cataract develops and consequently clouds an individual’s vision. With time, such clouding can grow bigger causing more vision obstruction. One may not initially notice the development of cataract as what may simply manifest is a slight blurring of one’s vision.

In the initial stages of the condition, cataract surgery is often not necessitated. Once cataract is detected, the doctor primarily suggests aids for visual assistance such as more powerful bifocals, magnifying glasses and adequate lighting rather than cataract surgery. However, once the cataract has significantly progressed and causes serious problems with an individual’s vision, it is then that cataract surgery becomes imminent.

Many may well have the notion that cataract is a normal phenomenon which goes with aging, and cataract surgery as a measure for the condition is a common and otherwise simple and painless procedure. Through a cataract surgery, an individual can regain their normal vision, and in a trouble-free manner at that.

The fact is, cataract surgery is one of the most common eye surgeries performed in the United States. Over 1.5 million cataract surgery procedures are done annually and 90% of those who have gone through cataract surgery were able to get their normal vision back. When a cataract surgery is performed, the doctor generally replaces the eye’s cloudy lens with an artificial lens, usually made of silicone or plastic.

Such lens utilized during a cataract surgery are called IOL or intraocular lens. Cataract surgery has become easier for the doctor and more convenient for the patient owing to advancements in IOL technology and manufacturing. There are now state-of-the art IOL which has upgraded cataract surgery and has made the procedure even more unproblematic.

The natural lens of the eye can be permanently replaced with an IOL implant during a cataract surgery. In a cataract surgery procedure, the clouded lens or the cataract is broken up through a process involving ultrasound. This process in cataract surgery is called phacoemulsicfication wherein the cataract or clouded lens after being broken up is suctioned out of the eye.

Other than this procedure, there is also what is termed as phacofracture. In a phacofracture procedure, the cataract or clouded lens that has been broken down is removed from the eye through a small cut made in the eye by the doctor.
