The general notion is that when it’s dark, you cannot see. You can probably picture yourself out groping for things to hold on to so as not to stumble. Or worse you can imagine yourself wandering aimlessly here and there until you trip over something and fall. But such a perception can now be considered as outdated.
After all, there are now various night vision equipments such as ITT night vision, night vision goggles, monoculars and binoculars, still and video digital cameras and thermal night vision. But when one says “night vision”, what does it exactly mean? Night is dark, right? And vision is one’s ability to see.

So night vision, in its most simple sense is being able to see in the dark. For those who are naïve and unexposed, this remarkable advancement in technology may sound at all incredible. But seeing a person or things in pitch dark is basically made possible now. There are those who may even think that such equipments are exclusive to an espionage agent or an espionage film.
But night vision equipments can provide entertainment and convenience to ordinary, mundane living especially to those who have the resources. In a place cloaked with darkness, it is possible to clearly see and this is made possible by technological breakthroughs in the 21st century. With night vision equipments, impediments to seeing in the dark are done away with.
With the most suitable night vision tool, it is now possible for one to see a person standing over 200 feet away and in complete darkness at that. Depending on the technology employed, night vision equipments work in two different ways. Nigh vision implements function by either image enhancement or thermal imaging.
When a night vision tool works through image enhancement, photons (which are light particles) are collected in small amounts. Among this collection of photons is the lower portion of the infrared spectrum. It is then that the equipment catches this portion of the infrared spectrum and then amplifies it to the extent that the image can clearly be observed.
With thermal imaging technology, the equipment works on the other hand by capturing the upper portion of the infrared light spectrum. It is then that the objects emit the light in the form of heat energy instead of light reflection. Furthering into the details of night vision technology can come as too complex for the common individual.
It may even appear as something inconceivable. But due to the aptitude of the experts concerned in night vision technology, what may have been unthinkable decades ago has now come to actuality. Depending on the nature of the equipment, there are varied reasons why many would want gain vision in the darkness.
It can be for purposes such as pursuing a hobby, for leisure or entertainment or perhaps as a part of one’s profession. The darkness is, after all, dark and if one doesn’t have the patience to wait till the light of day comes, night vision equipments can always come in handy.
