Different Dilemmas, Diseases With Red Eyes

Tags: , , ,

It is almost always noticeable when a person has red eyes. But what really causes them- red eyes? Well, for one thing, there is conjunctivitis, commonly known as sore eyes. Everybody well knows that red eyes is its foremost and most visible symptom. And often, the case is that when one has red eyes, people generally conclude that they have conjunctivitis.

Well, they may be right, but then again, they may be wrong, too. Other than conjunctivitis, there are countless other eye diseases and conditions which may cause redness. For one thing, there’s iridocyclitis. Or perhaps episcleritis or scleritis. Or glaucoma and corneal cancer. And these are just to name a few.

In cases of conjunctivitis, red eyes may just eventually go away without treatment. This as conjunctivitis is viral in nature. But for diseases like corneal ulcer, glaucoma and others, apparently urgent treatment would be necessary. Or else, permanent irreversible damage to the eyes’ function and structure may result. In treating eye diseases and their accompanying red eyes, some people use eye drops indiscriminately.

This is a form of self-medication and it is dangerous. The same can be said when using medication which is supposed to treat another condition. For instance, the drug policarpine. Policarpine is used to treat acute glaucoma. But when a person uses it for treatment of iridocyclitis, it would be disastrous.

Or when one uses the drug atropine for glaucoma. Atropine is supposedly used to treat corneal ulcer and iridoclycitis. This is cross medication and it can result to permanent damage. Cross medication and self-medication will most likely have deleterious effect. This can be said when trying to treat red eyes.

Red eyes due to common bacterial conjunctivitis is most often treated with suitable antibiotics. Along with them is frequent washing of the eyes. As for corneal ulcer and its associated red eyes, antibiotics, atropine and a pad to patch the eye may be employed. The eye pads are necessary to give rest to the eyes.

Symptoms of acute glaucoma may be pain, vomiting, headache, loss of vision and eye redness. Treatment of such may require pilocarpine drops along with systemic acetazolaminde or mannitol injection. As for iridocyclitis, symptoms may be red eyes along with pain and gradual loss of vision. Antibiotics, local and systemic steroids along with atropine may be the needed treatment.

In treatment of red eyes, the duration of the disease and initiation of the treatment is crucial. This means that red eyes and its associated disease will more likely have successful treatment upon early employment of medications. Delayed treatment of an eye disease and red eyes can have serious consequences.

Whatever the reason may be for not employing treatment, red eyes and the eye disease can be aggravated. As a result, one may be bound to lose some amount of vision. One’s vision may be preserved if a visit to the doctor is initiated. Red eyes and eye disease. They are conditions which require immediate treatment.

Otherwise, permanent damage can ensue and one may lose a faculty deemed as one of the most essential.
