Diet Pills: What You Should Know

Tags: , ,

One of the most ominous and prevalent dilemmas of the present times is obesity. This is due to our altered (and sedentary) lifestyle and disobliging diet. Since it is not only a cosmetic issue but more so a health and medical issue, majority of the obese populace turn to the scientific and immediate means of taking . "Magical" dietary supplements have been publizised all throughout the web and the media. Diet pills, teas, drinks and even bars have been popularized by companies manufacturing them claiming they produce sudden weight loss with no idiosyncratic effects. These dietary supplements that contain vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanicals, amino acids or substances such as metabolites and organ tissues are significantly acknowledged by the market as the ultimate solution to their weight problem, whether in the form of tablets, liquids, powders, capsules, softgels, gelcaps or in the form of bars.

Several diet pills are popular in the market and they work in various ways. For instance, there is Hoodia which is centrally-acting, i.e., affecting the brain and making the individual feel sated and reducing appetite. 7 Keto, on the other hand, provides more of the hormone that directs the thyroid gland to hasten metabolism thereby diminishing extra pounds and fat. Likewise, over-the-counter dietary supplements contain a combination of caffeine and phenylpropanolamine (PPA)which suppress the appetite. Caffeine, which can be found in many products, controls the appetite and is a stimulant causing increased alertness and eliminating drowsiness and fatigues as long as taken in minimal doses of 50-200 mg.

Another category of supplements are multivitamins. Multivitamins provide cellular nutrients that help maintain the muscles. A recent trend in diet pills are those made up of green tea extract which are stimulants working in the same manner as Ephedra which was eradicated from the market. But one mustn’t be complacent with diet pills. They will not suffice. They are much more effective when combined with exercise and dieting. It also requires tedious effort to maintain weight after losing them once the use of diet pills is ceased. True, such as Rimonabant, Xenical and Meridia have been proven effective to significantly reduce weight, but weight maintenance can be a challenging endeavor.Obesity can recur without exercise and diet or with the cessation of the use of diet pills.

Dietary supplements and diet pills are a diverse concoction of vitamins, minerals, botanicals and herbs, amino acids and other substances. They are complex compounds and may not correspond agreeably with your body function. It takes sufficient knowledge and awareness to find out which diet pills or supplements would suit you best. To put it bluntly, diet pills are essentially chemicals whether they be categorized as man-made or natural. Being so, they can react with your own body chemistry, or may have interactions with any food and medications that you are taking. And such reactions are “hit-and-miss”, so to speak. One must always be wary when taking diet pills.

Since most diet pills are not approved by the FDA, it is certainly a case of “caveat emptor” (“Let the buyer beware”). Diet pills may have adverse effects such as heart palpitation and racing, and in some cases, death. It is definitely wise to consult a doctor or nutritionist before resorting to and dietary supplements.
