The holidays may never be what it should be without alcoholic drinks. Alcoholic drinks are basically must haves in every party. Much more so during the holidays when it’s party galore time. Without the spirit of alcohol, socials and get togethers may not have the stimulation that everybody expects. True, alcoholic drinks have been inherent in every age and every society as a means to liven up a banquet or a festivity.
To this day it remains true, and a party may never be a party at all without a bit of intoxication from alcohol. In fact, alcohol intoxication can become so extreme that it can cause one to become embarrassingly uninhibited. And so social mishaps and blunders occur all due to being inebriated with alcoholic drinks.

But alcoholic drinks do more than cause one embarrassment. Much more so, it can wreak havoc on their weight loss program. In its simplest sense, alcoholic drinks can make one gain weight. Common sense alone would derive that such drinks are loaded with calories. If one is not careful with how they handle alcoholic drinks during the holidays, a weight loss scheme would end up to be on top of their new year’s resolution.
Party drinks have a hidden danger which lies more than getting one intoxicated. Alcoholic drinks contain incredible amounts of calories. So incredible that attending several parties or so and reveling with alcoholic drinks in every one of then can make one’s weight loss efforts all throughout the year go to waste.
One may ask why is this so. The truth is, alcohol is the second most energy dense food. It only comes second to fat. Nine calories are contained in every gram of fat, while every gram of alcohol contains 7 calories. This means that for every alcoholic drink that one consumes, they also take in an alarmingly high number of calories.
Take the case of Bailey’s Irish Cream and Margarita. A glass of Bailey’s contains 468 calories while a glass of Margarita contains 453 calories. And alcoholic drinks such as Vodka Cranberry, Pina Colada and Martini. They contain 250 calories, 297 calories and 413 calories per glass respectively. Alcoholic drinks such as Rum and Cola contains 240 calories while a glass of screwdriver has 200 calories.
The same can be said with drinks such as a mug of beer (150 calories), a glass of white wine (120 calories) and a shot of tequila (100 calories). To put these calorie count for alcoholic drinks in perspective, merely having 2 glasses of Margarita will provide one with half of their calorie requirements already.
That’s the simple math with alcoholic drinks. And this is not to mention all the other calories from food and snacks. Such is why it’s so easy to go over the calorie counter over the holidays. But still, the holidays are the holidays. It will never be complete without alcoholic drinks, so the best bet is to go easy on them.
For one thing, one can always fill their glass of alcoholic drink with ice cubes. Or perhaps use soda water to dilute the drink. And most of all, alcoholic drinks should never be used to quench one’s thirst. For that, there’s water and it contains absolutely zero calories.
