Tags: , , ,

Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases of the day and to date it causes tremendous casualties. Men and women alike can be affected by cancer although specific kinds of cancer affect men such as prostate cancer and while women on the other hand are predominantly beset with breast cancer.

Different other kinds of cancer exist as well which affects both men and women at varying degrees. But what exactly is cancer and why is it dreaded? Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells divide uncontrollably. Cancer generally progresses and the cancer cells can spread to the bloodstream and invade other tissues.

It can go to the extent of affecting the lympthatic system and on to other parts of the body. When abnormal cells invade the blood vessels, the bones, the cartilage, fat and muscles, it is generally known as sarcoma. As for breast cancer which remains to inflict terror on so many women, the cancer cells apparently attack the breast tissues.

Two hundred eleven thousand women are afflicted by breast cancer in the United States every year. Breast cancer is by far the one of the primary cancers afflicting women in the United States, coming in second to skin cancer. As this form of cancer can go to the extent of causing fatality among its victims, it is wise for women to gain awareness pertaining to breast cancer.

A woman must primarily be wary of any changes in how their breast or nipple feels or whether any difference occurs in their appearance as it is one of the common symptoms of breast cancer. To be especially keen about is when a lump or thickening in or around the breast or somewhere in the underarm area develops as it is one of the foremost symptoms of breast cancer.

The same can be said with tenderness of the nipple, a possible indication of breast cancer. Such changes in the breast or the nipples’ appearance brought about by breast cancer can be manifested by the nipple turning inward into the breast. The breast may have changes in its shape or size as well.

It can be a possible onset of breast cancer when the breast, nipple or areola skin becomes swollen or scaly. It can be a sign of breast cancer as well when the breast skin appears to have ridges or pitting and akin to that of an orange peel. Breast discharge is also one of the symptoms of breast cancer.

In its initial stages, breast cancer does not cause pain, but it is essential for women to undergo breast self-examination for early detection of the disease. Or else they could have regular check ups with their healthcare provider for mammograms and other necessary evaluations. Proper care and health measures instigated earlier can help prevent the development of breast cancer later on.
