To breathe means to live, that’s why breathing is a must. It is in inhaling and exhaling the elements that life is sustained. When breathing is hampered or erratic, it would affect a person’s health or state. One health condition which can quite be bothersome to the point of being disturbing is anxiety, or anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder affects the mind, primarily, and all else follows. An anxiety attack can bind a person with fear and debilitate them. Once fear takes control, a person becomes limited, to say the least. At most, they would suffer from a poor quality of life, or no life at all- because fear can be so compelling.

So how is it to deal with anxiety disorder or to ward off anxiety attacks before it overwhelms a person? There are those who turn to therapy, and some seek relief from pharmaceuticals. Others take the unconventional option of alternative treatments. One form of alternative therapy for anxiety attacks is breathing exercises. Breathing is therapeutic in many ways. It can release tension and relieve pent up pressure, more so when it is done right. Breathing exercises is an alternative therapy which can help relieve anxiety attacks, but it has to be done properly. Proper breathing exercises can aid in relaxation, and it can make a person calm down.
With breathing exercises, a person focuses on breathing, or in the act itself, rather than their anxiety. When it comes to such an activity, specific steps have to be taken to be able to get the desired outcome- calmness. What is breathing exercises done right? For one thing, a person has to breathe from the diaphragm. It is to breathe from the belly, so to speak, rather than the chest. Heavy chest breathing can produce contrary results- it can cause the anxiety attack to worsen. Proper abdominal breathing has to be done slowly as well- doing it deeply will also cause further anxiety discomfort. Learning how to breathe with the diaphragm may mean letting the person lie down while their chest is being held still. This will somehow “force” them to breathe with their belly- breathing with the diaphragm. Furthermore, one should breathe with their nose instead of the mouth. Breathing in and out using the mouth will again aggravate the attack. It basically promotes breathing through the chest. Breathing exercises when done properly can significantly relieve an anxiety attack. It is among the most commonly used measures for promoting relaxation and calmness. There are many ways of getting hold of such exercises. Learning yoga and meditation are two of the best means of learning more about it, and enjoying more of its benefits. Or else, one can get hold of other ways of doing it from their health care practitioner. Researching online from credible sites can also provide more information. Breathing comes naturally for most people, and it is naturally therapeutic, especially when one knows how to make use of it, and to the fullest. It might be something which is most often unnoticed, but one ought to think what would happen if it is gone.
