More In Touch With Nature Through Naked Yoga

2008-10-20What can be sweeter than being free from inhibitions. Of enjoying liberation as it should be, and simply being. Attaining such a state does not so much entail complications or sophistication. Rather, it is in going back to the basics, or to a person’s truest nature- his naked nature. This is among the prevailing principles in the long controversial practice of naked yoga.

One may initially have the impression that naked yoga is an offensive practice. This is often the case especially as the concept of nakedness has been defiled. Naked yoga when practiced in essence makes a person keep in touch better with his body. Furthermore, he is able to establish a deeper connection with himself and nature.

It can be a bit of a challenge for a person to bare himself naked in front of others in a yoga class. But quite a number of people acknowledge its significance. In the United States, the naked yoga practice has gained quite a following. There may be those who practice at home and on their own, but there are “bolder” ones who dare bare their “true selves” in a class.

As it causes quite a stir, and not many people are open to the concept of it, naked yoga classes have been kept fairly a secret. A naked yoga class can be of any size, and it is a combination of people- of any gender. In a class where everybody is without clothes, sexual connotations might be attached.



A true naked yoga practitioner will not be concerned by the notion of it. Yoga remains to be a spiritual practice, and “naked” is seen in a different light in this respect. What are the advantages of practicing yoga without the inhibition of clothing? Postures are integral in the practice, and with a person’s bareness, he can carry them out with more freedom.

As there are no restrictions, he is able to focus on better alignment. Mirrors often surround a yoga studio, and they can aid a practitioner on correcting his postures if needed. Yoga teachers as well can be keen on that aspect. They assist students in executing proper yoga postures and positions.

Only when yoga postures and positions are done properly can their benefits be gained optimally. In most cases, a person will feel embarrassment with their clothes removed in front of other people in a studio. But once he focuses on the task at hand (as a practitioner should), the feeling of embarrassment will begin to fade.

Yoga is not meant to be competitive. A true practitioner should be one who concerns himself with the practice rather than the presence of others. Attention should be turned inward, where a person reconnects not only with his body but with his inner feelings. Or on a more profound level, his spirituality.

It is in tuning with what a person’s body tells him, moving deeper into his inner self. Naked yoga is often done indoors, but practitioners claim that they are better attuned to nature through the practice. It is because inwardly, they have awaken their sensitivities, and they become more aware of the subtle energies of nature.

A person’s true nature is that of nakedness. Seen as it should be, it is one where there is liberation of being, which is nature in its truest sense.
