Alternative health is becoming a byword these days. In the internet, on t.v., even health publications, the term “alternative medicine” has become common. What really is it – alternative health or alternative medicine? Alternative medicine is that which is different from conventional or traditional medicine. Apparently, alternative methods diverge from their conventional counterparts.
Alternative health is in essence natural healing. When one says “natural healing” what may come to mind is something antiquated and outmoded. But the fact is, natural healing has been time tested. These natural modalities for wellness have long existed before conventional methods. And natural healing modalities, they were safe.

 They are not likely to have known side effects. Yet by no doubt, natural healing works. They are potent healing techniques yet they are safe. Societies of ages past resorted to natural healing. And it was able to contend with the various ailments and diseases that plagued them. Natural modalities have the backing of history to prove their efficacy.
So why can’t natural healing be effective to this day? Such is why natural methods are making a comeback. They are eventually being incorporated into mainstream medicine in the guise of alternative health. Alternative medicine is different from conventional medicine in that it encourages a person to take responsibility for their health.
Alternative health is more than visiting the doctor when one is sick. Alternative health is a lifestyle. More so, it is a frame of mind. Alternative health does not merely aim to heal an illness. It aims on living healthily in a natural manner to prevent illness. Alternative health is all about holistic wellness- that of the mind, body and spirit.
How can one achieve this? By being aware. By realizing that the mind, the body and the spirit are intertwined. When one aspect is all, then the rest will be affected. Alternative health is all about balance. A balance of the total being which leads to total wellness. When the body is sick, so will be the mind and the emotions.
The same can be said with the contrary. When a person is ill spiritually, then it can cause irregularities with the mind and the body. Illness can strike these aspects when the spirit is unwell. That is the essence of alternative health. A healthy lifestyle for the total being to be in optimum well-being.
Exercise, nutrition, acupuncture, massage therapy, acupuncture, aromatherapy, herbal remedies. They are some of the most popular alternative healing modalities. So are stress management, yoga and meditation. These lifestyle and healing methods all address the total being- the physical and the non-physical. And they are natural means at that. Non-toxic, anodyne, safe and gentle yet effective.
Those who live the alternative health lifestyle do not at all negate conventional medicine. It’s just that they are not likely to need the conventional approach anymore. With their choice of alternative health, they are resolved to take responsibility for their health and their lives. No need to be helpless under the power of toxic chemicals and invasive procedures.
Alternative health is all about harmony from within which extends to the balance of nature on the outside. It makes a whole lot of sense and can be a better option for better living.
