As there are those who have grown frustrated in the endeavor off addressing their ailments and conditions with conventional therapy, the advent of alternative therapy gave the health-conscious populace another option in the quest for optimal health and well-being. Alternative therapy which is under the coverage of holistic medicine foremostly addresses stress as its philosophy signifies that it is emotional, psychological and spiritual stresses that cause a person to become ill.

Some of the most effective techniques under alternative therapy which can be effective in dealing with personal stress are tai-chi, meditation, yoga and aromatherapy. As opposed to conventional approaches which deal with illnesses in a physical sense alone, alternative therapy addresses the person as a whole and treats holistically through mind, body and spirit.

In the pursuit of overall health and well-being, alternative therapy just might be the solution as it is not inclined on giving instant remedies, but most often, alternative therapy is a long term process of healing all the aspects of the total person. Reflexology, herbal health, massage therapy acupuncture and chiropractic are also within the coverage of alternative therapy which others consider as more gentle yet effective ways of healing the total person rather than surgery and prescription drugs.

After years of ostracism by conventional medicine, natural and alternative therapy is now becoming more mainstream and acknowledged by the society. Recent studies have in fact cited that out of 18 major HMO’s and insurance providers, 14 offered at least 11 out of 34 alternative and natural healing methods. The most popular and frequently covered alternative therapy modalities are acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic and herbal remedies.

But even with this increase in insurance coverage, the general public remains undereducated about the benefits to be derived out of incorporating alternative therapy into their normal health care regimen. On most occasions, alternative and natural healing modalities are used in conjunction with conventional methods. For instance, aromatherapy may be used to aid in recovery after a surgery.

Herbal remedies can also be a recourse rather than prescription drugs. As alternative healing practices are now gaining increasing popularity and acceptance, numerous schools have opened courses in alternative therapy methods to train prospective practitioners. Programs in alternative and natural healing methods offered in schools focus on various techniques ranging from spa therapy to holistic health practices which focus on holistic healing of the body.

With increasing awareness and education for the general public, alternative therapy may provide a safer and effective route to holistic well-being and a better quality of life.
