Against The Pandemic Of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Tags: , ,

Many may well be familiar with the term “ ”. In fact, it has been associated with tedious office jobs and repetitive tasks. Carpal tunnel syndrome has become an epidemic in the past decades, and in the advent of the 21st century, the condition has in fact reached pandemic proportions. Carpal tunnel syndrome has affected millions of individuals in the past few decades and with the hype concerning it, one might have a clear-cut idea pertaining to the condition. The fact is, an accurate diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome can be vague, and it may be hard to determine for an individual whether they or someone they know is afflicted with it.

What really are the conditions which lead to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome? As the term implies, the condition has to do with the carpal tunnel which is a passageway whereby nine flexor muscles, the median nerves, the arteries, blood and lymphatic vessels pass through and is associated in supplying function and movement to the wrists and fingers. Lining the carpal tunnel on the backside of the wrist is the carpal bone and on the front side of the wrist is the transverse carpal ligament. The arteries, tendon muscles and the nerves glide each other with ease within the carpal tunnel which is approximately the size of the index finger.

There is generally an onset of carpal tunnel syndrome once the carpal tunnel decreases in size which can be instigated by the shifting of the carpal bones. A muscle imbalance which is due to the constant overuse of the finger and wrist muscles through one-way movement patterns in turn cause this shifting of the carpal bones. Under these circumstances, there is an impingement of the structures within the carpal tunnel leading to painful and debilitating symptoms. Paresthesia or pins and needles, tingling, numbness, and loss of grip strength and coordination generally manifest when one suffers from carpal tunnel syndrome.

There may also be a presence of sensations involving tightness, stiffness, discomfort and pain on the front side of the wrist although such indications can be associated with general repetitive strain injury as well. For an individual to accurately determine if they have carpal tunnel syndrome, they must look for symptoms that affect thumb, index and middle finger. At times, one half of the ring finger may also be involved in the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. The discomfort and possible debilitation of carpal tunnel syndrome can be done away with by carrying out proper stretching and exercises that address the underlying muscle imbalance which is believed to be behind carpal tunnel syndrome.

Knowledge in ergonomics and using ergonomic office furniture may also aid in carpal tunnel syndrome prevention.
