Dental Hygiene Is A Major Health Concern

Tags: , ,

Integral to a wholesome personality is . Many are well aware that dental hygiene has to do with brushing the teeth two or three times a day and flossing at least once a day. An individual with proper dental hygiene is also mindful of the toothpaste they use. It has to be fluoride toothpaste acknowledged by the American Dental Association. One might think that dental hygiene is necessary due to the social and cosmetic benefits that they deliver. After all, when one keeps to it conscientiously, they are sure to have a healthy set of teeth, a beautiful smile and fresh breath.

Apparently, such factors are vital, but what remains crucial about dental hygiene is that it can have a major health impact when neglected. For instance, if an individual does not take into account proper dental hygiene measures such as tooth brushing or flossing, then it means that in between their teeth, there will more likely to be plaque build up. Plaque is bacteria which develop right above the gum line and when it is not removed, chances are that it will turn to tartar. Tartar is a chronic dental condition and only the dentist can remove them through a dental procedure called scaling.

If tartar is left untreated, an individual can have an onset of gingivitis which is a gum disease. And at this point, if one still does not adhere to proper measures, gingivitis can turn severe and become serious causing a condition called periodontitis. It is possible that poor dental hygiene can result to this chronic form of gum disease which is a damaging stage of infection. The damage wreaked by periodontitis can go to the extent of affecting not just the teeth making them loose or lost but it can make the bones weak as well. Recent studies have likewise indicated that periodontitis caused by dental hygiene negligence is associated with diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Such threatening conditions can actually be instigated by poor dental hygiene leading to periodontitis and it is mainly due to oral inflammation. Oral inflammation can lead to the infection getting into the bloodstream, and from the bloodstream into the arteries. Consequently, the arteries become inflamed causing them to be more vulnerable to cholesterol and fat deposition and many are well aware that such a condition can be a precursor to a heart attack. Such is the clear picture of how dental hygiene has a major influence on one’s health. One must remain keen on being thorough on their dental hygiene habits as studies have cited the individuals with high levels or oral plaque or bacteria are posed at higher risks for heart attack and strokes.

Likewise, individuals with an existing heart condition should all the more be meticulous about their dental hygiene. It is not so much the extravagance of that matters, but what remains crucial is adhering to the basic dental care measures of regular tooth brushing, flossing and keeping to a well-balanced, healthy diet.
