Detoxifying. In another sense it means cleansing. Detoxifying and cleansing are deemed essential especially in the current setting. The environment is generally becoming more polluted and food sources can be contaminated. Who knows then the gravity of internal contamination that such toxins can cause. An increasing number of individuals now acknowledge the importance of cleansing and detoxifying.

As a result, countless methods for such purposes have been devised. One of them is the detox diet. When going on a detox diet, one actually makes changes in their eating habits. This goes with how, when and what they eat. A detox diet is designed to rid the body of toxins.

As such, the detox diet has several health benefits. Some of them are improved health, energy and digestion. A detox diet can also boost one’s mental state and immune system. It can even promote weight loss. Modifications entailed in the detox diet may require one to fast. Often, water fasting and juice fasting are needed for detoxifying.

The same goes for increasing fish consumption (such as salmon) and restriction of calorie intake. More importantly, the detox diet calls for more fruit and vegetable consumption, limiting processed food and eliminating alcohol and smoking.





When an individual keeps to a poor diet, the body’s natural detoxifying process will be diminished. This can then cause an aggravation of toxin build-up in the body. Illnesses, nutritional deficiency, hormonal imbalance and weak metabolism can possibly result. A detox diet can address such health conditions. With an effectively implemented detox diet, one can become more energetic, have regular bowel movements and can experience more clarity and better concentration.

Other than that, one can also have better digestion and clearer, healthier skin. As the detox diet entails drastic modifications, pregnant and nursing women as well as children are not advised to keep to it. It holds true for those with anemia, diabetes, liver and kidney disease and low blood pressure.

Those addicted to alcohol and drugs should not go on a the diet as well unless advised by the doctor. As much as the idea of a detox diet seems appealing, it does however have side effects. One of them is headache which usually occurs after a few days of going on a the diet.

Others may experience diarrhea due to dehydration and loss of electrolyte. Keeping to the detox diet can also make one constipated especially if they go on a high fiber diet yet have insufficient water intake. Prolonged adherence to the detox diet can also result to nutrient deficiency, especially calcium and protein.

Other adverse effects of the diet are acne, weight loss, hunger, irritability and fatigue. As several adverse effects go with the detox diet, it is best that one seeks expert advice prior to adhering to the diet.
