The increasing trend of vegetarianism apparently gave rise to the popularity of the . There may be varied reasons why an individual would want to keep to a vegetarian diet, such as when they are against the killing of animals, or when they want to protect the environment or whether they want to boost their overall health and promote weight loss. When one thinks “fruits and vegetables”, what usually comes into mind is “healthy”, or “low calorie”, or even perhaps “low cholesterol”. Such notions are in most ways true as those adhering to a vegetarian diet often have reduced risks of developing threatening health conditions such as obesity, heart diseases, diabetes and cancer.

Those in the habit of eating with a vegetarian diet appear to have more vitality and enjoy longevity as well. Other than the common means of eating fruits, vegetables, beans and nuts in a vegetarian diet, there are those who incorporate the diet with cheese, milk and eggs as well. A vegetarian diet by all means is low in fat and cholesterol, and such is its foremost advantage. Despite the fact though that the diet can ward of certain health threats, it may be worth noting that going vegetarian can cause one to suffer from nutrition deficiency. The key to an effective is to use it wisely with proper planning.



When keeping to the diet, one must make sure that they are having adequate nourishment of essential vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other nutrients. As a vegetarian diet is all about a hefty consumption of non-meat foods, it can be derived that it is low in protein or iron. Both nutrients are basically essential for overall health, so to ensure that one has sufficient intake of them despite going vegetarian, they can instead consume soy which has high protein content, or spinach and beans which are rich in iron. When going on a vegetarian diet, one must ensure that it is well-balanced.

In most cases, vitamin and mineral augmentation through dietary supplements may be necessitated. Other than that, one can take the recourse of alternatives such as having ample consumption of broccoli, whole grain cereals, spinach and soy milk. When one is on a vegetarian diet to lose weight, they should restrict themselves from eating high calorie foods. Variety is crucial in a vegetarian diet. By this, it means having adequate consumption of different sorts of fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts and dairy. As for intake of dairy, it must be ensured that one resorts to those which are non-fat or low-fat.

Studies have shown that vegetarians have lesser calorie intake than meat eaters which proves that the vegetarian diet is one of the best means to lose weight. Vegetarians are also known to have low body mass index. This does not mean however that going on a vegetarian diet is absolutely all about healthy eating. A vegetarian may have the tendency to have poor eating habits and may not have healthy control over the amount of foods they eat. The is best used wisely to help one achieve their health and weight loss goals.
