Things will forever change – a fact which we can always count on in life. But change, it is random. You may never know if it is something which will benefit you, or otherwise distress you. Our bodies change as we age. Over the years, we shift from one career to another. We move on to different places through the course of time. We find happiness from one and many other things. People come and go in our lives - we hold on and we let go. All these changes, they may come gradually, or the contrary- abruptly. A person may not really know in which manner his life will change as much as he would want to gain control.

One is unlikely to put a rein on how life changes unfold, in what order and in which time or span of time. These constant changes will make us want to establish stability. But the stability we seek is ironically gotten hold of in how we adapt to change. But at some points, matters so drastic can come to shake what may seem as the solid ground a person stands upon. Alterations to the tedium of humdrum living a person lives can become so overpowering and cause them to be befuddled. One of the most agitating life alterations a person can ever go through is when he is beset by an illness, a life threatening illness. When a person is diagnosed with a threatening illness, all other areas of his life is rearranged.
The thought of one’s life being threatened by an illness and of facing the unknown, is it not tremendously overwhelming? All living things follow cycles- seasons come and go as they should, in their own time. Planets rotate around the sun, constantly following their course. As much as these elements have their flow and rhythm, so does your body. But when an illness strikes, what has been given is to be reconsidered. How you have previously enjoyed sleep, and how you have relished food and eating, your facility to focus and concentrate, they can significantly be agitated. Foods which you used to delight in may begin to lose their appeal. The hours in which you used to enjoy sleep might be reduced or lengthened. And as much as such a word is so unkind, you might have to “suffer”. So you seek to do without such word- “suffering”. But how do you create a new ebb and flow so that you don’t “suffer” in the midst of an illness? How do you get hold of balance when all else about you is shaken? Human as you are, you need other people. More so at a time when the very person that you are is left almost defenseless to a force unseen yet so compelling- a threatening illness. It is when you will need to feel the warmth and essence of another human- to comfort and reach out to you. As much as experiencing a distressing illness is overwhelming, there are those who share the same plight as you. The scene which you behold may have become dreary, but with a companion, you can strive to see a different landscape, a more beautiful one. And this beautiful landscape is seen as you look beyond the dreary image the illness has placed before you. Look for compassion in the midst of an illness. Compassion for yourself and for others, and you will heal as a person. Your physical aspect may have grown weary, but seek to make your spirit alive, because it is that which truly lives. The life you have lived may be compromised, but look to something bigger and absolute- Life. And it is that which knows absolutely beyond your human comprehension. All you need to do is trust and let go.
