Tags: , , ,

Everybody well knows what drug addiction is. On the surface, they may merely say that drug addiction is a physical and psychological dependence on a drug or a substance. A drug addict has the compulsion to use the drug or the substance regardless of its health and social consequences and detriments.

Oftentimes, drug addiction starts with drug abuse. But one may ask, what is the difference between drug abuse and drug addiction? Primarily, drug abuse is connoted with prescription drug abuse. It is when an individual has excessive use of the drug, like pain relievers, to relieve their pain. In most cases, use of such drugs exceed than what the doctor has instructed, but what the user foremostly considers is that the drug makes them feel better.

It eases their ailment. Drug abuse may mean that an individual takes drugs to cope with the pain of a physical ailment or the adverse effects of a physical condition. In a sense, though, the manner in which they take these drugs is unwarranted although such a habit or behavior makes them able to live a better quality of life.

In such cases, those who has such tendency are not necessarily addicted to the drug. This excessive drug use is defined as drug abuse when done even merely just once or frequently. Drug addiction is apparently a more chronic case. Drug addiction is when one can’t stop themselves from using the drug.

They have a compelling urge to take a drug or a substance otherwise it will have physical and psychological consequences. Those consequences in fact render the drug addict impossible to stop using the drug, and they have to get hold of and take the drug at all costs. Such is why drug addiction has long been a constantly nagging social menace.

Drug addiction instigates all sorts of crimes as drug addicts often have to resort to illegal, even violent means to acquire the drug they are addicted to. Other than that, crimes can also be the result of drug addiction as an addict with an altered or even deranged state of mind can do morbid acts without their knowing.

In that sense, drug addiction is regarded as a disease. A disease with dire and appalling consequences not only to the sufferer but to the society as well. Often, the initial drug use leading to addiction is caused by a reaction to a situation deemed out of control by the user which is why drug addiction is considered as a behavioral disorder.

The use of mind altering drugs distorts an individual’s consciousness therefore drug addiction can be a means for a psychologically and emotionally unstable individual to cope with the incongruities of living. It remains though that such coping measure is an unhealthy, destructive and dangerous one. Everybody may know what drug addiction is, but that knowledge may merely be on the surface.

What everybody knows about drug addiction may merely be facts, but beneath it, very few may understand of the grim and dismal story of the struggle of those sinking deeper into the abyss of drug addiction.
