Putting Order To Eating Disorders

The late 70s throughout the 80s was marked by the “social issue” on . At that time though there was no public acceptance of eating disorders as a disease much less acknowledged as society’s collective concern. It was like a best-kept secret particularly in Hollywood and the community of the rich and famous. Eating disorders were just not a “healthy” topic thus not appropriately addressed. Fast forward to today, eating disorders of course have become an advocacy especially in Hollywood and particularly in the community of the rich and famous. Psychologists qualify eating disorders as mental illnesses that affect one’s eating habits in such a way that drastically disturbs the physical health.

Eating disorders, simply put, are abnormal eating patterns An in-depth analysis made by psychologists and psychiatrists established the types of eating disorders as Anorexia Nervosa, Beriberi, Bulimia Nervosa, Hyperphagia, Kleine-Levin Syndrome, Rumination, Binge Eating Disorder, Orthorexia, and Pica. Anorexia Nervosa is characterized by food deprivation marked by fear of putting on weight. Anorexics as those afflicted are called are abnormally thin yet actually see themselves as fat. So they deprive themselves with any nutritious food until their system breaks down and no longer can accept regular food. Bulimia Nervosa on the other is binge-eating where one forces food intake then forces it all out.



The earliest star known to have died of Anorexia Nervosa was singer Karen Carpenters. Of late, fury against this disease has generated aggressive action from the world of potential anorexics and bulimics in the fashion industry where the matter is directly addressed. Thankfully, it is no longer hip to be super-thin. When a person is affected by , usual food intake is obstructed and affected that in the longer run causes grave health problems. Individuals who are afflicted go through severe psychological suffering. Food, diet, and body image become their primary obsessions and they torture themselves to deprivation or abuse.

Needless to say, cases of eating disorders are not to be taken for granted. Professional help must be sought at the earliest stage. Methods for treatment of are categorized into three groups which are diet regulation, medications and psychotherapy that ranges from individual to family therapy. Yet it is important to understand that the problem of eating disorders did not happen overnight reason why solution should not also be expected overnight. It is a process that needs one’s willingness to be cured and essential here is family and peers’ support. Eating disorders however viewed must be recognized as a disease that eats up the very core of one’s body and self-esteem.

And to best fight the disease, one must understand which of these eating disorders and corresponding treatment is appropriate in order to avoid further harm. Yes, eating disorders are diseases caused due to the abnormal eating behavior of an individual. And yes, eating disorders causes many to suffer. Eating disorders are one of the clearer signs that happen at the most problematic time in a person's life. It does not matter what your sexual preference is nor age, religion or race is a factor. happens to even the best of us or the best of your friends, associate or family member.
