I had tried many expensive products to try cut down or stop - nicotine gum, the nicorette, patches - and nothing had worked."

Like many other people, Chris tried nicotine cessation therapy to quit smoking. However, what’s not displayed on the packaging of nicotine cessation aids is their very poor 5% long-term success rate.

In the end Chris, under pressure from his family, found a solution to his problem - and it didn’t involve quitting.

An alternative to smoking

The electronic cigarette contains nicotine, but without the associated tar, tobacco and combustion found in cigarettes.

The devices are not perfect.

Nicotine is still addictive, and it is thought that nicotine may exacerbate some smoking-related diseases if a smoker has already developed these.

However, the UK National Health Service maintains that nicotine does not cause smoking diseases, while scientists such as Professor Carl Phillips, an expert in tobacco harm reduction, point out that nicotine alone can not match the danger of nicotine mixed with tar, tobacco and combustion:

"..long term use of nicotine poses a small, a very small but non-zero risk of some cardiovascular diseases so I suppose you could call that a side effect which is predictable for the long run, but that’s a total risk which is down in the range of drinking coffee, nothing remotely similar to the risk from smoking cigarettes."

A threat to established interests.

Thousands of smokers have already turned to the electronic cigarettes, but they still represent a small fraction of all smokers.

Some estimates suggest this could change over the next ten years, wiping out the tobacco companies and destroying the nicotine cessation industry run by pharmaceutical companies.

In turn, the device would be likely to reduce government revenue from tobacco taxes and destroy a major source of the anti-smoking lobby’s income - much of which is provided by the pharmaceutical industry.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there has been a vigorous campaign against the electronic cigarette, with one of the key points being that the e-cigarette is not 100% safe.

Scientists who support the device argue that the anti-smokers are missing the point; the point being not that the device is safe but that it is safer.

"Everything has risks, so simply pointing out that something is ‘not safe’ shows a person to be either ignorant or disingenuous," points out David Sweanor, a former advisor to the WHO on the topic of tobacco control. "Despite the risks associated with soccer, I would, for instance, prefer my children play soccer rather than play with live hand grenades."

For Chris, the answer is clear.

"Not only do I smell better, but I am sleeping better and I can breathe more easily.

"And, perhaps best of all, my family is happy."

For more information about the e-cigarette see the free e-book, The Electronic Cigarette

About the author. Thu, 29 Oct 2009 19:18:21 -0700 Home Remedies For Skin Burns http://www.healthzine.org/Home-health-care/good-remedy-for-minor-burns http://www.healthzine.org/Home-health-care/good-remedy-for-minor-burns Have you ever had skin burn? I think everyone have experienced having skin burns at least once in their life. But would you know what to do or the remedies in case someone just did?

Keep in mind; don’t apply anything on it right away. Run your skin burn under running water of slightly cool temperature for at least 20 minutes first then you can do these helpful tips.

DON’T put ice on it or it will make it hurt and even worse after you removed it from the wound. It also does harm to the skin area surrounding the burn. Also if skin burns are on extremities, meaning hand or feet, better elevate them so to reduce inflammation.

Toothpaste they say is a good remedy for treating minor skin burns. Though, there are a lot of opinions about this. Some say it does work well for some, a no no. To those who have tried it and agree that it is indeed helpful, said that it has a cooling effect which makes you feel better. But I would only recommend using it if the burn is very minor and closed. I would not recommend toothpaste for an open wound because it will result to having blisters.

Milk is also a good remedy for treating minor burns. Just simply soak the affected skin area in cold whole milk for approximately 20 minutes and it will bring about instant relief. What’s more, the fat content in whole milk helps the wound heal faster.

We mustn’t forget the Aloe Vera. Just slice off a small piece of the fleshy leaf, open it, and then apply the fresh sap directly on the skin burn. Aloe Vera has astringent and tissue-healing properties so it works fabulous for skin burns.

Also, the Vinegar, which is luckily available nearly in all households. Simply cover the injured area with a cloth, soaked in diluted vinegar of any kind. The vinegar acts painkilling and relaxing.

You can also use honey or lavender oil. Just cover the skin burns with it. Researchers found out that burns dressed with honey healed faster and with less pain and scarring. As with Lavender, it is a very effective antiseptic, and is also pain killing. For larger burns, Lavender oil should be poured neat onto a cloth or gauze, and applied to the burn, and then just renew it every few hours.

If blisters occur, do not break it because it will cause further damage. They are nature’s protective coating. Doing so might cause infection. Better put antimicrobial creams to prevent it. Also, if you have put dressings onto it make sure that you change it often enough.

Those are only a few first aid for minor skin burns but if you do have some suggestions feel free to share it here.
When should you call a doctor--- mild skin burns need medical treatment if they cover a large area or are very painful. Also, if it’s on your face, hands, feet, genital area, joint areas or the area affected is larger than your hand. Additionally, see a doctor if the victim has a fever, chills, is vomiting or has swollen glands; or if the site of the burns smells nasty or leaks pus.

Overall, there maybe more remedies for burns than what I have mentioned but it’s always best to prevent having them especially with children. Who knows what worst could happen. About the author. Dr. Rose Windale is a successful Health & Wellness Coach who has been advising and coaching individuals for many years. Wed, 26 Aug 2009 00:29:29 -0700 Lift Your Mood The Natural Way http://www.healthzine.org/Depressions/Omega-3-Supplement-For-Warding-of-Depression http://www.healthzine.org/Depressions/Omega-3-Supplement-For-Warding-of-Depression Depression is a serious matter that needs to be attended. All over the world, millions of people suffer from this debilitating illness. And because people lack information regarding this condition, they tend to disregard it; thinking that this disorder is just a normal occurrence in a person’s life, which will eventually go away. But there is more to it that meets the eye; an unattended and disregarded depression can ultimately lead to suicide! Sadly this debilitating state chooses nobody. No one is safe from being affected by depression. It doesn’t matter whether you’re rich or poor, influential or a commoner, young or old, male or female. Once the person starts getting depressed, that person will behave in manners beyond what is considered normal. Luckily, we live in a world that is created in perfect balance, where a thing is created in order to balance the existence of another. In the case of depression, eating salmon, sardines, tuna, anchovies and mackerel which are rich in Omega 3 can help ease depression. The Omega 3 fatty acid in these fishes can be qualified as brain foods, because it helps ward off this disorder; the reason for this is that this element increases gray matter in our three different areas namely the Amygdala, the Hippocampus, and the Cingulate. People who suffer from this condition tend to have smaller amounts of this element than those who do not. This is from a study conducted recently. This increase in gray matter could help explain why past studies have found that the Omega 3 fatty acid DHA reduces the symptoms as well as effects of depression. The rationale here is, the more DHA a person consumes, the more gray matter in those three areas is added. The core benefit of fish oil consumption which can primarily be found in salmons, tunas, and other seafood’s is that people who eats less of these seafood’s are more likely to suffer from this depression. I encourage you people to opt for foods rich in this element. As for another type of Omega 3 ( alpha-linolenic-acid) , good sources of these are the dark and green leafy vegetables, flaxseed, canola oil, walnuts as well as soybeans. So to those who have family members, who suffer from this mental condition, give them Omega 3 supplements to warding off depression. The best part is it’s a natural way of treating this disorder. As I have stated there is a medical study that can back up this claim. About the author. Tue, 25 Aug 2009 23:23:59 -0700 Unleash The Beauty Of Your Abs! http://www.healthzine.org/Bodybuilding/three-steps-in-sculpting-your-abdominals http://www.healthzine.org/Bodybuilding/three-steps-in-sculpting-your-abdominals Do you ever think of what you would look like if you had six pack abs? Well, you are not alone! Because there are a lot of people who also dream of having a flat and well toned midsection. It should make sense because having well toned abdominal muscles is a plus factor for men and a sign of discipline and determination. The reason for this is that a great looking midsection involves strict dieting and an unshaken determination to reach your desired result however difficult the task may be. Indeed it is the ultimate sign of fitness, because a well-sculpted; but not too ripped midsection is an awesome sight to behold. But there’s a catch! The problem is that obtaining a great midsection is not that easy. There are people who are born with low body fats, which when they choose to workout, they get their desired result’s in just a fraction of the time. And for most of us, we would need to really exert much effort in order to achieve the same result. But wouldn’t it be great if we have abdominal muscles that are well toned? What I mean is we would have bragging rights for as long as we have washboard abs right? Well, not to the extent that we annoy people around us, but in some ways we can join into a conversation when this subject is talked about, right? Good news to those who wants to develop their abdominal muscles. It’s possible! It may take weeks, even months, but the important thing is, it’s doable! Here are three steps in sculpting your abs. Step number one is to shed those unwanted fat away. Let’s face it people, your bloodline may have the most beautiful set of abdominal muscles but if it’s covered with fat, then nobody would know, right? In order for them to be revealed, you need to maintain a 7-8% of body fat (for men). And the best way to do this is to eat more meals than the usual 3 times a day; eat 4 meals a day. The concept here is to eat more times but having fewer servings. This gets your body focused on your calorie intake for a meal than the total calories you take in a day! It means that you get to manage your calorie consumption plus your metabolism keeps on working. When eating, lean proteins is highly recommended when targeting the abs. Fiber consumption is also beneficial in developing your midsection; eat vegetables and fruits and drink lots of water. Remember to avoid fried foods and refined sugar. Strength training will also be best in developing your abdominal muscles; you can do this for 2-3 times a week and for cardios, 4 times a week of interval training or ball sports is best for your midsection. And to add, I recommend my favorite sport – swimming! I regard this water sport as the ultimate body sculpting activity, because when you swim, all of your muscles work. It’s great! Second, in order to achieve great abs, one has to do exercises like the bicycle maneuver, the hanging leg raise and the forearm plank. These three will definitely deliver! Lastly, maintain a healthy lifestyle, this is where determination and discipline come in. A man of great discipline is most likely to achieve this endeavor. You see, ab sculpting does not only benefit the body, it also benefits the maturity of the person. You can learn a great deal of lessons when you decide to sculpt your abdominal muscles. You learn the importance of determination and discipline both your body and your mind. So are you ready to have your abdominal muscles sculpted? About the author. Fri, 21 Aug 2009 02:04:16 -0700 Partake A Glass Of Wine A Day To A Healthier You http://www.healthzine.org/Alternative/Health-benefits-of-Red-Wine http://www.healthzine.org/Alternative/Health-benefits-of-Red-Wine Eating the right food has been regarded as an effective way to ward off diseases. Much so, it has been regarded as a potent one at that. These days, things have changed. From the food that we eat to the way we treat diseases. Recently, pharmaceutical drugs have been taking over as magic pills in treating diseases. I thank the medical society in their effort to constantly think of ways to treat diseases. But let me pose a question to you all; has it occurred to you that in one way or another, your lifestyles may have caused the condition you have right now? Let us not forget that fruits and vegetables are nature’s magical agents of battling diseases. Well… with other contributing factors of course. Eating a medley of fruits and vegetables is an effective way of keeping fit, isn’t it? In regards to this, I believe that Plato was right when he said that "Nothing more excellent or valuable than wine was ever granted by the Gods to man." Maybe he was just expressing but the truth of the matter is this beverage has greater health benefits than just a plain beverage. Studies have shown that red wine is good for the heart. And a glass of red wine a day can give great health benefits. Research has also indicated that moderate consumption of red wine can help protect against certain cancers as well as heart diseases. Still let me affirm that all things that’s done excessively can be dangerous. Red wine is an alcoholic beverage which is rich in antioxidants; it contains one of the most studied antioxidant, Resveratrol. This compound is found in the seeds and skin of grapes. Red wine has a very high concentration of this compound because of the grapes skins and seeds that ferment during the process. One of the many benefits of red wine is its ability to protect us from degenerating diseases like heart failures. This is because the compound Resveratrol has blood-thinning properties and has been found that it limits the formation of blood clots. This compound also amazingly minimizes DNA mutation that can lead to cancer. This compound works wonders, because it induces cell death in cancer cells and also blocks new blood vessels that feed tumors. With these benefits at hand, I can say that wine and health can go hand in hand together, but it must be taken in complete moderation. So to gain good health, you should do your part as well, with a drink or two of wine a day, religious watching your diet and with a good amount of exercise; you will go a long way. About the author. Wed, 19 Aug 2009 01:46:45 -0700 Know What To Do When You Need To http://www.healthzine.org/Pain-treatment/aims-of-first-aid-and-emergency-preparedness http://www.healthzine.org/Pain-treatment/aims-of-first-aid-and-emergency-preparedness It is important to know how to give first aid, particularly to life-threatening situations. Examples of these are choking, excessive bleeding, drowning, poisoning and the stopping of ones breath or heartbeat. A first aid is what a person can do to a wounded or sick person, or on any immediate situation that involves life threatening matters, before the doctor arrives. The aims of first aid and emergency preparedness are: To keep the person alive; this counts for life threatening and immediate situations/cases. Another is to stabilize the condition of the person, and lastly, to relieve any pain, discomfort and most importantly, anxiety. Ideally, a first aider is someone who has attended classes on emergency care and has undergone first aid training. But not all of us have the opportunity to attend such trainings because of our individual work and activities. In relation to this, this article is dedicated to those people who do not have the knowledge of emergency treatment, as well as those people who want to know the basics of emergency treatment. Almost all of us will have to administer an emergency assistance at some point; and if this is so, we would have to use a first aid kit. This is the reason why it is always advised that every home should have a first aid supply, simply because an emergency knocks on the most unexpected time. Next is let us define the term emergency. An emergency is a sudden onset of a medical or surgical condition that is manifested by symptoms of sufficient severity that, in the absence of an immediate medical attention, could reasonably result to serious danger to ones health or it may impair bodily functions. Examples of these are: Head injury with drowsiness or vomiting, Loss of consciousness, Severe injuries sustained in accidents or falls, Broken or dislocated bones, the sudden or severe chest pain, the sudden or severe abdominal pain, an uncontrollable bleeding, Choking, and drug overdose or poisoning. In relation to this, here are some basic emergency first aid that you can do. First of all, remember to assign one person to call a doctor or an ambulance, while you administer a first aid. The next thing to do is to open and check airways; you should remove any materials that cover the mouth and the throat. You should also check the breathing, and if there’s none then proceed to mouth-to-mouth assisted breathing. Re-starting breathing has first priority, except when the problem is choking. Check also for severe bleeding, if the case is seen, then try to stop this. In cases where you suspect a spine injury; remember this: Do not move the person, and do not also turn or tilt the head. Just slide the whole body with head or neck support. Spine injury may be suspected if the person has fallen from a very high place, or has numbness/lacks sensation in/cannot move his upper or lower limbs. Another case to be considered is that, when a person is unconscious, but breathing normally and with no suspected spine injury, put him on a recovery position. And lastly but also very important, Do not leave the person, until medical help arrives. In cases where you are alone and no medical help has been called, and the person has no spine injury as well as the persons condition is stable, it is advised that you take the patient to a nearby hospital/clinic. It is not everyday that we are faced with this situation, but it is always a plus factor if you can administer such treatment; for all you know you may save a life. About the author. Mon, 17 Aug 2009 00:46:14 -0700 So Do You Want To Be A Living Canvas? http://www.healthzine.org/Skin-care/The-different-kinds-of-tattoos http://www.healthzine.org/Skin-care/The-different-kinds-of-tattoos Tattooing is an expression of the self and is usually a permanent form of body alteration. To some, they consider this as a jewel which cannot be removed. It is in this art form that they are happiest. Moreover these body art are representations of their past experiences/chapters of their lives that they want to remember. To some tattoos are expressions of their love to that particular person. Art comes in various forms, it can be through paint, multi-media or ink. And in the form of ink, the canvas is most recommended, and the human body used as a canvas is the most obvious place for a person who wishes to express his/her personal emotions. In fact we all use our bodies for self-expression: It only takes sheer imagination, and all outlets are endless. And for those people who want to get one, but without proper thought and for bad reasons, then the most probable effect is that you come out regretting. But if you feel that a tattoo will complete your desired expression for as long as you live, and you are aware of its after effects to your personality as well as its message to others, and still choosing it for all the reasons that you believe is right, then you may be doing an admirable job. Now let us learn more about the different kinds of tattoos. First the amateur tattoos: These are done by individuals or by their friends by jabbing ink, charcoal or ashes under the skin with a pin. These kind of art lack artistry, and because these practices are done under unsanitary conditions, the risk of infections are very high. Another form of tattoos is the cultural tattoos. This is done through traditional practices and only to certain members. This is common in tribes and ethnic groups. These bodily arts serve as a ritual, societal and cosmetic functions as well. And lastly, the professional tattoos. When wanting to get your very own mark of self expression; it is fully recommended that you seek a professional to do this for you. Professional tattooists are registered artists who use a tattoo machine. Now why do people get a tattoo? In connection to this, there are only two reasons why a person would like to get a tattoo. Reason number 1 is to demonstrate individual uniqueness, and reason number 2 is to show that you are a member of a certain group. Now that this is settled; I have a follow-up question – Should you get a tattoo? Dr. Jonette Keri a dermatologist at the University of Miami says “NO”. “Down the road, you may want it – bodies at 60 are far different at 30, Dr. Keri says. And Dr. Keri adds that there are still people who have preconceived notions about people who get tattoos. If you are looking for a job, and you have a body art on you, then you may not land the job that you want. Tips on Safe Tattooing. In getting your very own body art, always remember that this is a permanent mark with an invasive procedure that requires breaking of the skin and coming in contact with your blood. Here are some tips to consider. Make sure that the studio is as clean as a doctor’s office. (Hint: If the bathroom is dirty, get out of there) Check also the business license; check if it’s up to date. And lastly check the tattoo area, look for a separate tattooing area and make sure that the area is clean and with a hard surface, and with no random items that can contaminate the work area. Getting tattoos are very serious decision to make, and if you are not certain, then you may want to think twice. And lastly a little research will be very handy. Think well! About the author. Fri, 14 Aug 2009 01:06:45 -0700 Alternative Treatment And Care For Insomnia http://www.healthzine.org/Sleep-disorder/Alternative-treatment-and-care-for-insomnia http://www.healthzine.org/Sleep-disorder/Alternative-treatment-and-care-for-insomnia Millions of people around the world are suffering from the condition called sleep disorder. This is a condition that is characterized by difficulty falling and/or staying asleep. Normally people with sleeping disorders have one of the following symptoms; a tired feeling even when the person just woke up, and waking up on very early hours of the morning. Another symptom is, waking up during night time and having trouble when going back to sleep and the most common is the inability to sleep at night. All of us have experienced this sleeping disorder at one point of our lives, though there are times that this disorder is linked with overwhelming feelings over a certain person, normally this is associated with emotional feeling like that of infatuations and post excitement feeling over the opposite sex. But there are also serious sleep disorders that we have experienced, this is known as insomnia or the difficulty to sleep, and though this condition is temporary, it can also become a problem if this condition occurs every night. Different people needs different amounts of sleep, there are people who can get by on 4 to 5 hours of sleep each night, while there are others who needs at least 8 hours or more. Insomnia therefore is not a question of how many hours a person sleeps but rather how many restful hours that sleep is. And when we talk about sleeping disorders, we always look for its causes. In line with this, here are a few common causes of Insomnia. Stress is one great factor of this disorder, be it domicile stress or from work, stress remains the number one common cause of this nocturnal problem. Another cause would be the changes in lifestyles, a good example of this is when a family moves to a new home. Illness can also be a cause, such illness associated here are those that cause pain, breathlessness, or the frequent passage of urine, and lastly the state of anxiety or depression. The treatment of this nocturnal disorder may vary from person to person; one recommended treatment is the alternative method. Here are some alternative treatment and care for insomnia. Alternative therapy, encompasses a variety of disciplines that ranges from exercise to lifestyle changes and mental conditioning’s. Examples of these are acupuncture, yoga, massage/aroma therapies, herbal remedies and many others. The kind of attack in this method is to calm the person who have trouble in sleeping, or simply relieving the pain that the person feels. In other cases, this condition is remedied through meditation. Now it may sound odd at first, but the focus of meditation is actually the treatment of anxiety or depression which causes the person to stay awake at night. Another remedy for sleeping disorders is through Relation and Meditation. It is a known fact that the increase of tension in the muscles as well as intrusive thoughts could interfere with sleep. Therefore it is not surprising that techniques in relaxing the muscles and quieting the mind can be an effective treatment for insomnia. In relation to this, such exercises like tai chi and yoga have been proven to relax the mind; results are the person can sleep without any bothering thought that may hinder him/her to do so. Though alternative therapies may relieve this nocturnal problem, let me also say that alternative therapies are not FDA approved and not always benign. Therefore it is always advised that you should always talk to your doctor before engaging in any alternative approach, and always tell your doctor what alternative treatments you are using, (if you use any),you should also avoid preparations that needs more than one herb and most of all, select your brands carefully. Thu, 13 Aug 2009 00:28:04 -0700 The Healthiness Of Sex http://www.healthzine.org/Mens-health/health-benefits-of-sex http://www.healthzine.org/Mens-health/health-benefits-of-sex Sexual intercourse is a sweet gift that offers the most pleasurable and sensual experience to couples. This is a gift to the physical needs of the couples that only a couple has the right to enjoy. This gift was created in order that an individual body, be viewed as one, and wipe off the weakening effects of the days work. Normally in a sexual act, men have the tendency to take control. They are the person responsible for a woman’s sexual satisfaction. Indeed there are a lot of print materials regarding sexual tips; but did you know that there are more to it than just sexual satisfaction? Boosting your immune system is certainly the last thing that you would think, if you’re on the mood, but, good sex offers a good amount of health benefits and more. According to Dr. Davidson, as well as other experts, the health benefits of an intercourse aren’t hearsay – here are the many health benefits of sex. The Fountain of Youth – Believe it or not, Sex keeps you feeling younger and looking younger as well. There are even researches that indicate that sex may lead to shiny hair, a glowing complexion and brighter set of eyes. The reason behind this is that coitus increases DHEA, a youth-promoting hormone. In the same vein, a good intercourse helps boost the immunity. Having sex twice a week promotes higher levels of antibody called immunoglobulin A or IgA. This is the antibody the helps protect you from infections and colds. Love making increases blood flow – One of the many health benefits of sex is lowering the blood pressure, and together with this is overall stress reduction. The logic here is, when we are aroused our heart pumps at a higher rate, thus blood flow increases, therefore new supplies of blood circles the body, thereby providing the organs with healthy doses of oxygen. Love making burns calories – A thirty minute session burns 85 calories or more. And though it’s not much,it adds up through continuous sessions. Thus a vigorous bed activity will burn 200 calories or more. This is like running on a treadmill for 15 minutes. Love making is a great exercise, says Dr. Patti Britton, a sexologist and president of the American Association of Sexuality Educators and Therapist in Los Angeles. This sensual activity is a healthy and enjoyable activity to couples which takes work both in the physical and the psychological perspective, to do it well, Dr. Britton says. Love making improves your Cardio’s – it is a common fallacy that sex could cause a stroke; In a study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, scientists have found that frequency in love making is not associated with stoke. Moreover researchers have found that men who indulge in love making two or more times a week reduces the risks of heart attacks compared to those who are having less of this bed activity. And lastly, good love making promotes a sound sleep. The reason behind this concept is the hormone called oxytocin which is released during orgasm. This hormone is a natural sleeping agent. Moreover, getting enough sleep has been linked to other good things too, such as maintaining a good and healthy weight and a better blood pressure. And to add some more, the hormone oxytocin helps build trust and intimacy to your love partner. The healthiness of sex is a gift to all couples. It is an aegis of health and satisfaction; a divine providence given to couples to cherish and to enjoy. About the author. The difference between Ergonomics and Bionomics is that the focus is not only limited to the physical environment alone; it also focuses on the proper management of the body as well. But before going further, Let us first define what bionomics. Bionomics is defined as the field within ergonomics that includes behavioral science, biomechanics as well as posture. The said area also includes vocationally based stretching. It is a combination of two words; Bio, as the body and Nomics as management. The goal of bionomics is to teach a person prevent any strains like back injuries at work or in life. Simply put, This is the completion of Ergonomics… well at least for now, because we always keep moving forward. The word bionomics was conceived as an answer to the prevalent high cost of work related strain/sprain. These injuries are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and other ilk injuries; it is now commonly called as musculoskeletal disorders. These painful muscular discomforts causes big money loses to the U.S. industry because of costly errors and office related injuries. But a modification in the physical environment as well as the use of mechanical assistance has helped to lessen the exposure of stress for many employees. With this tool, work flow has experienced a sound atmosphere because of reduced absenteeism, and productivity boost. Indeed fundamental training like Ergonomic training has been a great help in both the people as well as the U.S. government. Simply because these safety trainings, teaches us to how to properly use our own bodies in our daily jobs thus preventing injuries and costly cycles of discomfort, pain, and the quality of job that we do. In line with this problem, the solution is born – Bionomics. It has been proven that the reduction of work related injuries; an employee can learn how to be responsible for their own well being, perform efficiently as well as perform effectively at work. Fri, 7 Aug 2009 01:57:36 -0700 Parents Transform Yourselves Into You’re Your Childs Best Friend http://www.healthzine.org/Drug-abuse/Be-your-child’s-best-friend http://www.healthzine.org/Drug-abuse/Be-your-child’s-best-friend Substance abuse and addicting substances like drugs has taken its toil upon the young ones of today’s generation. And factual reports regarding addiction and drug abuse are prevalent; and certainly the government has done their job on the matter; but what have you the parents done to address this issue at hand? Because when it comes to you the parents; your kids may be reluctant to discuss these issues. Before we go on, I’d like to ask you parents, how do you attack these issues? In this article I aim to teach the parents who are doubtful if their kids are into drugs. Here are the ways of addressing them. The first step is to always pose as a “friend” they can run to when they’re in need? This is very crucial; remember that there are secrets that your kids would tell their peers, what they wouldn’t expose to you.Your main goal here is their Trust. So by all means, be that friend that they “WANT”. After all, your main purpose is to provide your kids with the proper care and support that they need. And when this goal is accomplished all else will fall smoothly. Be your child’s best friend. The next thing that needs to be done in order to prevent drug abuse is to use the surrender tactic. You need to transform weakness into power. You see drug addiction is a result of the parent’s leniency. In connection to the premise pose as a friend that they want, you need to have an observing eye but in pure discretion; make you child think that they can be themselves even when you’re around, this way they may reveal important secrets with you. You see alcohol and drug abuse is a very serious problem. This is a problem that needs to be crushed totally. And certainly you wouldn’t want your children to be victims of drug abuse, right? Always be wise as a serpent, but harmless as a dove. Another way that parents can avoid drug abuse is to “Control all Options”— Get your child to play with the cards you deal. This is very easy to do; As you pose as the friend that they’ve always wanted, but you secretly observe them; your children will have the tendency to follow your every suggestion. Simply because you’re they’re parents. This time lead them into the right path, slowly but effectively. To do this you need to know the likes and dislikes of your children, all you need to do is to focus on their positively charged likes and reinforce it. Simply put, if they like music, enroll them into a music school or if they like sports, enroll them to a sports clinic that they like, this is one way that you divert their attention from drug abuse. And lastly preach the need for change, but never reform too much at once. This concept will come easy if you have founded a good and strong relationship of trust to them. And when they’re ready, bring them to a drug abuse treatment center, and most of all never leave their side, remember that you are their hero, so become that hero that they want, support them in every way you can, this is your role as a parent. These are just a few ways to approach the situation. I know that you can always come up with other ideas. But always remember this – never turn a teachable moment into a scene of scolding. Battling drug abuse is easy, all you need to do is be creative, and always have real conversations with them, and all of this starts if you become a friend to them, your precious angels. Thu, 6 Aug 2009 00:29:51 -0700 Lifestyle Factors That Can Reduce Breast Cancer http://www.healthzine.org/Womens-health/Strategies-in-Battling-Breast-Cancer http://www.healthzine.org/Womens-health/Strategies-in-Battling-Breast-Cancer A family background alone is a poor predictor of breast cancer. This is a common misconception that needs to be rectified, says researchers whose latest study argues against the use of family history when determining women’s risk for this serious disease. When researchers examined the predictive value of family history in assessing breast cancer risk, researchers have found little correlation between the said disease and family history. And because of this claim, researchers have developed a predictive model in order to discover if there really is a correlation on the said claim, and it was found that roughly 1 in 10 women with a strong family history of breast cancer, could be expected to develop breast cancer before the age of 50, and only 1 in 100 women is likely to develop this disease before they reach the age of 30. So how do we avoid this degenerating disease? The answer lies is in us, because breast cancer prevention starts with your health habits – such as alcohol limitation, being physically active and healthy eating. Evidences say that healthy eating combined with regular exercise contributes to the prevention of breast cancer. So to help you prevent this fatal disease, here are some health care strategies in battling this fatal disease. These will help you decrease your risk for breast cancer. Diet and exercise are amongst the easiest things to control. Remember to always stay fit as possible. Regular exercise is one of the many ways in maintaining a healthy weight. In the same vein physical activities can aid you in battling the said condition. Now, if you haven’t been physically active in the past, you can always start in a slow pace then later when you progress, you can go for a greater intensity. You can also try weight bearing exercises such as walking, jogging, or aerobics – these exercises are proven to make your bones strong. Thus you become healthy. When we talk about prevention, one should always consider limiting fat in his/her diet. According to research, the results from the most definitive study of dietary fat and breast cancer suggest that there is a slight decrease in the risk of invasive breast cancer who eat low fat diets. Though the effects are modest; reducing the amount of fat in the body may decrease the risk of other diseases, such as diabetes, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. Another way to reduce the risk of this disease is to limit the use of alcohol. There is a link between alcohol consumption and the said condition, though for the time being nobody can certainly say of the greatness of this link, but it is always best to consider the limitation of alcohol. And lastly you should always maintain a healthy weight. Contrary to the use of alcohol and its link to the said fatal disease, the link between weight gain and breast cancer is definite. Experts have speculated that the production of estrogen in fatty tissues may be the link between the two. So in relation to these strategies, here are things that you can do. In addition to lifestyle changes, you should always be vigilant on the early signs of this degenerative condition. It is advised tat at age 40, women should start having mammograms. Be vigilant in looking for lumps or skin changes, and make sure that you make the necessary appointment to your doctor. It is also best to know basic information’s about this condition. Though there is no assurance that you will have a cancer free life; the practice of healthy habits, regular self checks, as well as regular consultations to the doctor will help you reduce the risk in this fatal disease. Fri, 31 Jul 2009 00:06:16 -0700 How To Reduce Back Pain Through Ergonomics http://www.healthzine.org/Ergonomics/How-to-Reduce-Back-Pain-through-Ergonomics http://www.healthzine.org/Ergonomics/How-to-Reduce-Back-Pain-through-Ergonomics Ergonomics is defined as the science related to man and his work. This word embodies the anatomic, physiological, and mechanical principles which affect the efficiency of human energy. Examples of these are safe lifting techniques, appropriate seating positions, proper posture and adaptive equipments. In other words, Ergonomics is the study of how your body interacts with the environment that you’re in when you perform an activity or a task. Ergonomics often involves arranging your tools, lighting’s as well as the way you do a task-to fit you and the activity you are doing. With regards to the office; office ergonomics focuses on arranging your work environment in order that you feel eased while you do your job. When your workstation is properly arranged, there is a big percentage that you efficiently do your tasks, this way you don’t feel stressed because there are no piled up work that needs o be continued the following day. And you may be less likely to have problems such as eyestrain’s or headaches. Most of all you are most likely to reduce neck pain, back pain, shoulder pain and joint pain. So whether or not your workstation causes you physical problems, a workplace that is properly arranged can increase your productivity and the quality of your work life. An ergonomic office can help an employee become more comfortable in his work, thus he reduces stress and injuries that is caused by awkward positioning and repetitive tasks. It is in this situation that an ergonomic evaluation is needed. This evaluation examines the set-up of the workstation that is relative to the employee’s posture, the time spent that a position takes in doing a particular task, movement repetitions as well as the types of movements that an employee does in his workplace. It also examines the surroundings. This includes the work surface, the noise level which is relatively important, humidity and temperature and the lighting’s. Lastly this evaluation also targets the tools that an employee uses in his workplace. This includes the computer mouse as well as the scanning machines. Now, in the context of how to reduce back pain through ergonomics, there are certain basic ergonomic guidelines that may help you prevent back injury. To prevent these uncomfortable situations in your workstation, it is important that you position the work so that you can sit comfortably and minimize stress. This way you prevent any discomforts on a specific area of your body. This is called pain management. You also need to vary your positions and your tasks. This concept is not only applicable to your workstation; this concept is also applicable to the activities that you do at home or in any activity that you do. In the same vein a workplace that is ergonomically arranged reduces occupational illness and injury. Less money will also be spent on the worker’s compensation claims. There is also an improvement in the quality and productivity of the work, as well as less absenteeism on employees. It is therefore a must that a workplace needs an ergonomic touch , this way injury may be avoided and the workers can perform efficiently in a given task thus harmony embraces the workplace. Wed, 29 Jul 2009 01:00:07 -0700 The Link Between Depression And Obesity http://www.healthzine.org/Obesity/The-link-between-depression-and-obesity http://www.healthzine.org/Obesity/The-link-between-depression-and-obesity The link between depression and obesity is analogous to that eternal question between the chicken and the egg—which really came first? Studies have shown that American adults and children have higher rates of obesity and depression than ever before. It has been shown that obese people are most likely to feel left out of any social circle and have a harder time climbing the career ladder, regardless of their capabilities. Experts have seen a connection between people’s weight and their mood. This is because, according to them, obesity causes chemical imbalances in people which can regulate the way they feel. As a result, obesity can transform people to become depressed especially since they not only experience poor health but are also unsatisfied with how they look. Regardless of whether you believe your weight is the cause of your depression, you must know that help is available and easier to get than you think. An effect of depression on people is that they are more likely to become obese. This is due to the physiological changes that occur in their immune systems that affect their hormones when they suffer bouts of depression. People like these find it difficulty to take good care of themselves because they just can’t get themselves motivated to do so. In the case of obesity depression; losing the weight is something that demands a lot of self discipline since you would be tackling not just the weight but also the depression as well—a Herculean task at best. Keep in mind that your attitude determines your altitude so if you already feel like this would be a difficult task to accomplish then it will be so, even when it’s not. The good news is that the solution to obesity is doable and within reach. Seeing as it is a difficult thing to tackle by yourself, try joining a support group. Support groups that remedies obesity can help you cope with your struggle because you will be with people who share the same problem as. Examples such as Weight Watchers and Overeaters Anonymous can provide you with the support structure that you would need to get rid of those feelings of despair. Activities such as exercise and stress reduction can help take care of both obesity and depression. Try not to depend too much on anti-depressants since they may have detrimental effects as well—like exacerbate your weight gain. Throw that rigid diet out the window and try to explore new things instead. Try to change the way you think abut food, especially on how it relates to you, that way you don’t feel guilty or deprived every time you eat. For instance, choose low-fat snacks like popcorn or fruits that can fill you up without leaving you empty in terms of taste or satisfaction. Instead of sautéing veggies in butter try steaming them instead. Change your lifestyle—instead of driving to the corner grocer walk there instead. Take a stroll in the park, do yoga or go out on weekends. In other words do things that are of interest to you and that you get fun out of. In simple terms, try to incorporate physical activity as part of your daily routine. However, make sure you consult your doctor before making any major changes to your lifestyle, way of eating, and before starting any physical activity as they may detrimentally affect your health. Slowly but surely should be your motto—gradually break yourself into your new routine. Find a friend to share the activity with, this way you have someone you can interact with and at the same time motivate you to go on. Lastly do not hesitate to seek professional assistance. Your emphasis is on weight loss so that you can focus on your well being. Remember the world doesn’t have to be on your shoulders. If you can’t bear it, share it. About the author.
