Mon, 22 Sep 2008 10:04:20 +0200 Back Support Pillows: Back Boons..or Banes? http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-support http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-support Back pain can be such a bothersome issue. Others may me so lucky as to suffer from a milder form of it, but then again, for some it can be excruciating. In fact, back pain can be debilitating, especially when it is chronic in nature. Even more disappointing is that chronic back pain is a condition that a person might have to live with for the rest of their life. If any of the forms of the condition has been annoying you for some time now, you might be at the point of looking for a solution- one which is truly effective. There are those who tried pain killers, and so might have you. Another option are natural supplements which are effective in themselves as well. Furthermore there are home remedies or natural remedies. Alternative therapies, too, are becoming popular and are gaining a large number of following. Physical therapy and chiropractic are also reliable means for treatment. And then the more diverse back pain products in the market which present themselves to avid back pain solution seekers out there. Pertaining to such products, you might have heard of back support pillows. Manufacturers and marketers of this back support product have disseminated information that they are one of the ultimate answers to this annoying condition. But are they really? You’ve heard the claims of companies producing back support pillows. And these claims, don’t they seem so convincing? As if these support pillows are a simple and basic solution to your condition. You are looking for an ideal support product or device for your back problem. Apparently, you may have been dealing with the discomfort of back pain, or else you might have a posture problem that you would want to correct. For either of these issues, you might have already gone to your doctor and were prescribed medications or treatments of some sort. Considering that they might not have given you satisfactory results, you now would like to take into account other options, or other back pain products or solutions. You might want to make means of correcting improper posture. But in doing so, do not fall prey to manufacturers and companies which may not have your best interest at heart. These manufacturers or companies may not have an inkling of why you had improper posture to begin with. As with most other conditions, the most suitable treatment is arrived at when the root cause has been determined. How does a person develop improper or incorrect posture? For most cases, this condition has to do with weak muscles. For you, it might have started as merely not remembering to “stand up straight”, until over time, such a tendency became a habit. And being the unhealthy habit that it is, it resulted to back pain. Your muscles have become weak over time and unable to support your posture. You then may have thought that all you would need is a posture support device or product to remedy the issue- to put an end to your back problem. But the effectiveness of support pillows for such a purpose remains dubious. Others have claimed that such products are initially effective- they alleviate the discomfort of the condition. But in the long run and over time, support pillows allow your muscles to become weaker. It is because the product has caused your back to stop working. And what was it which caused you improper posture in the first place? Weak muscles. And then you would be back to square one. In the search for the best back pain solution, consider that or those which work intensively and addresses the root cause of the problem. Even more so, it has to be safe, and natural if you may. Tue, 22 Jul 2008 13:34:00 +0200 A Back Brace Just Might Be What You Need http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-brace1 http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-brace1 Back pain is a common condition and nuisance which can come to the point of being debilitating. This ailment could go to the extent of being excruciating and could get in the way of your normal daily activities. There are many treatments for the condition, but not all of them are effective nor suited for every patient. In fact, in chronic cases, a patient would even consider going through surgery. But when it comes to back problems and conditions, surgery is seen as the last recourse. When all the other solutions and treatments have failed, only then would doctors consider doing surgery. Before you take the final leap of deciding to go through the knife, think if you have gone through all your options. There is a practical and effective solution for back pain in the guise of a back brace. A back brace just might be what you need for your back pain or disorder. Thousands of people all over the world actually make use of braces for such conditions. Other than preventing pain and discomfort, a back brace can also help avoid further damage. Through a brace, you can find a safer means of treatment, and without the need of surgery. One of the main reasons why many people use a brace is to prevent having to go through surgery which can be risky. A back brace is less complicated than surgery, and it can even be just as effective. It is often dependent on the kind and severity of the condition, but nevertheless, it is a viable solution. Chiropractors, doctors and physical therapists often recommend the use of braces. In fact, you will find that only a handful of these professionals and practitioners would not recommend braces. Time and time again, for many years, braces have been a proven remedy for back problems. If you have opted to use a brace, remember that making a decision may not come so easy. There are over 30 different kinds of braces to choose from. On your own, you might have difficulty finding which one will suit you best. You will need to see a doctor to determine which sort of back brace would be most appropriate for you and your condition. A skilled professional’s opinion will best guide you on your choice. A popular sort of brace is the lumbosacral brace. This device is designed to support the lower back area. Material for lumbosacral braces is often durable and heavy cotton. Laces are attached on the side of the belt and they are adjustable. That way, you can fix the brace for the most comfortable pressure. The main purpose of wearing the belt is to restrict motion. The compressive force of the belt allows this. As motion is restricted, you would not be able to do much movement. This in turn will have positive effects on the area. The lumbosacral brace is among the many options to choose from for braces. Other similar devices which can be your possible option are corsets. Corsets are either long or short, and they address pain and discomfort on respective areas in the back. Discuss with your doctor about which option will suit you best. And if you’ve made the right choice, you can be on your way to better and more comfortable living as a nagging pain or discomfort will finally be done away with. About the author. Wed, 28 May 2008 15:32:22 +0200 The Why’s And How’s Of Upper Back Pain http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/upper-back-pain2 http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/upper-back-pain2 At some points, people are beset by aches and pains here and there. Such ailments can be minor, others moderate and some severe. There are those which merely cause a slight discomfort while others can be debilitating. Certain factors contribute to these, such as one’s regular activities and their lifestyle. When one is sedentary, they could be prone to ailments as well. As much as one may think they are free from injury because they are inactive, they ought to think twice. Take the case of upper back pain. Many people think that upper back pain results from poor posture or injury from work or physical activity. This notion is true for some cases, but they ought to know that upper back pain can also result from inactivity. When the muscles of the back aren’t used, they tend to weaken. And so this ailment might manifest. To be specific, the cause of this is muscular irritation. What on the other hand is muscular irritation? Upper back pain due to muscular irritation is caused by inactivity or poor muscular strength in the shoulder girdle. This certain part connects the scapula to the thoracic cavity. To alleviate this ailment, chiropractic care may be helpful. The same can be said with deep muscle massage, acupuncture and physical therapy. Stretching and strengthening exercises can also be resorted to for treatment. Joint malfunction is another possible cause of upper back pain. This is most likely caused by strain and injury occurring in the joint between the ribs and the upper back. As a treatment measure, muscles in the said area ought to be loosened and strengthened. That way, strain can be relieved and future injuries prevented. A chiropractor or physical therapist is best qualified to employ this treatment measure. To alleviate the pain, anti-inflammatory drugs could be taken as well. Steroid shots will only be necessary if they are injected right at the trigger point (the area where the pain originates). What are the other causes of the condition? A herniated disk or a ruptured disk is one, although it is less common. Merely 1 percent of people with herniated disk complain of problems related to the condition. Another uncommon cause is degenerative disk disease. People who work for long hours in the computer and staying in one position are more prone. To remedy this certain problem, one should practice proper posture. Strengthening and stretching exercises could also be helpful. Suggested treatment options are the following. One is physical therapy, an established field in addressing joint and muscle pain as well as injuries. Then there is chiropractic care which was once scorned by the medical community. But chiropractic has now proven its credibility as it is garnering a wide following. The same can be said with acupuncture which is an ancient Chinese healing art. Deep muscle massage is another alternative therapy for the ailment. Upper back pain may not be so common than other pains affecting the back area, but nevertheless, it can be discomforting, to say the least. To ward off such a condition, one ought to practice care and caution when going about with things. They should be done with proper posture. Exercise is also essential to get the joints and the muscles working, and to have them fortified. About the author. When future flare ups would occur, you will also find that you will have a speedier recovery. In fact, such a measure may also prevent future episodes. However, the actual exercises that you will resort to are dependent on the cause of your condition. Tue, 29 Jan 2008 12:03:51 +0100 A Mind, Body And Spirit Healing For Lower Back Pain http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/lower-back-pain http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/lower-back-pain Back pain can come to the point of being agonizing. And yes, it can be debilitating. After all, there is chronic back pain, and yes it is chronic. It can even last for years. Back pain is common as much as it is painful. It has been estimated that 7 million Americans suffer from chronic back pain. Eighty percent of the American population on the other hand is afflicted with lower back pain. This is quite a large percentage, especially in lower back pain cases. There are many known causes of lower back pain. Physical causes that is. It can be fatigue or poor posture. Sitting in one position for long hours. Lifting something improperly. Or injury. These are just to mention a few. It might be interesting to note that lower back pain has emotional and mental causes, too. After all, mental and emotional states are related to the physical condition. When the mind and the emotions are ill, often times, the physical body will be, too. The mind, the emotions, the spiritual aspect and the physical state are all intertwined. This is applicable to lower back pain as well. Lower back pain is associated with the lower back or the lumbar region. This are of the body is otherwise known as the L1 to the L5. Lower back pain has mental and emotional causes. This has been a fact and it has been documented. Beginning through the ages of ancient Chinese medicine, this concept has been established. Based on the book “You Can Heal Your Body” by Louise Hay, the following are the mental and emotional causes of lower back pain. Among these are also metaphysical ways on dealing with these root causes. If lower back pain originates from the L-1, then it means a crying for love. It can be an indication that one is lonely. By all means, the root cause can be insecurity. If the back pain comes from the L-2 region, it can be that one is stuck in childhood pain. They see no way out of this. Pain in the L-3 of the lumbar area means sexual abuse. One may be feeling guilt or self-hatred. Lower back pain which has to do with the L-4 may have something to do with rejection of one’s sexuality. It can also mean financial insecurity or fear of one’s career. It can also be traced to feelings of powerlessness. As for lower back pain associated with the L-5, the root cause may also be insecurity. One may have difficulty in communicating. There may be unexpressed anger. Or even the inability to accept pleasure. Lower back pain can also arise from the sacrum. When this happens, it may mean loss of power or harboring some old stubborn anger. If the back pain comes from the coccyx, then it can indicate being out of balance with oneself. Holding on to something or blaming oneself. This can also mean sitting on an old pain. For all these mental and emotional causes of lower back pain, healing is essential. Adopting a better perspective and letting go of negative feelings and energy being harbored. A mind, body and spirit healing is needed to deal with a physical and non-physical “dis-ease”. So it is with back pain and its root causes. About the author. Dr. Rose Windale is a successful Health & Wellness Coach who has been advising and coaching individuals for many years. Fri, 11 Jan 2008 04:55:55 +0100 For The Best Plan Against Back Pain http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-pain2 http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-pain2 Pain is certainly not a pleasant sensation. Basically nobody wants to experience pain. But still, at some points, everybody goes through pain. When such occurs, there can only be a dire search for pain relief. The same can be said with back pain. Back pain can possibly become debilitating. It depends on the severity of course. But still, back pain is pain. It can make one winch. It is uncomfortable, to say the least. So what is the best plan against back pain? For a thorough diagnosis against back pain and for the best course of action against it, determining the cause will greatly be helpful. Isn’t a cure oftentimes arrived at once the cause or the source is addressed? This is especially true of back pain. When pain in the back is caused by poor posture, then the remedy is pretty easy- and obvious. For resorting to a relief measure, knowing the cause can go a long way. For instance, a pregnant woman has back pain. She knows her condition causes her pain. Thus, she can only resort for means to relieve her discomfort in relation to her pregnancy. Her course of action would not be the same as those other conditions causing back pain. And what seems to be the best way to deal with back pain? Which is the best course of action as there are many options for it? Primarily, one has to consult their doctor. The doctor has the authority to recommend and prescribe the most suitable treatment or relief for back pain. But of course, the patient can have options, too. There are cases wherein narcotics are taken to relieve back pain. Although narcotics usually have side effects. However, narcotics may not be the exclusive choice to contend against back pain. There are natural remedies, like exercise, or massage therapy and natural pain relief supplements. Exercise is an especially helpful natural back pain relief. But then again, the proper exercises have to be carried out. These exercises can help to promote the flexibility and strength of the back muscles. A medical professional is best consulted for proper exercises. Exercise, when appropriate is a pain relief measure which basically has no side effects. The same can be said with massage therapy, provided of course it is done by a skilled massage therapist. There are natural pain relief supplements available as well. And they are less likely to have side effects than narcotics. But in some cases, back pain may go with other symptoms, and this may need urgent medical attention. Surely, this pain is something which one should not self-medicate on. If back pain is accompanied by fever, headache, gas and chest pains, then it needs to be referred to a medical authority. These symptoms may indicate that something chronic is going on other than a mere discomfort. Medical help is best sought for these situations. The same can be said when one experiences pain in the back due to other illnesses or conditions. The doctor always has a say when a patient consults them, but then again, a patient has choices, too. This holds true for back pain and its treatment and relief measures. About the author. Tue, 11 Dec 2007 15:05:43 +0100 Strong Spinal Support Through Lower Back Exercises http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/lower-back-exercises- http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/lower-back-exercises- Exercise is essential to keep the bones and muscles strong and flexible. As much as strengthening and stretching may initially hurt, it is hurt which can have rewards. The same can be said with the backbone and the back muscles. The backbone is otherwise known as the spine. And the spine is the back’s main support. Much of one’s posture, movement and health depend on the spine. It is only necessary then that the spine is fortified. One of the best means to strengthen the spine is through lower back exercises. Lower back exercises serve to develop the strength and stability of the spine and the back muscles. Lower back exercises can also ward off or remedy back pain. In this sense, lower back exercises are deemed helpful in so many ways. As much as it is with other forms of exercise though, lower back exercises have to be done gradually. Otherwise injury may result or be aggravated. When it comes to doing lower back exercises, the body has to initially be conditioned. And this is done through stretching and warm up exercises. A daily routine of lower back exercises can play a crucial role in promoting the back’s overall health and functioning. Lower back exercises are integral in strengthening the spine. Strengthening the spine offers advantages in more ways than one. The spine is one of the most complex structures of the body. It is what keeps a person walking upright. That’s how vital the spine is. It only goes to say that the spine has to be regarded with care. In achieving a strong, healthy and flexible spine and back, one has to be mindful about the lower muscles. The lower muscles are also known as the abdominal muscles. The abdominal muscles provide support for the lower back. Lower back exercises can keep the lower muscles strong and balanced. Being so, lower back exercises can also be the key in preventing and healing back pain. Lower back exercises are mainly consisted of stretching and strengthening techniques. By performing lower back exercises, the back muscles are built up and nurtured. Consequently, proper posture and overall health are sustained. Stretching in lower back exercises is a powerful means of relieving pain in the lower back muscles. It develops the flexibility of the spine and creates a condition which promotes healing. To ensure that the back will be healthy for the years to come, one must regularly engage in stretching exercises. Performing stretching in lower back exercises releases tension stored up in the muscles. As a result, tightness and spasms are eliminated. This in turn eases the pain. Subsequent to stretching exercises are strengthening exercises. Most people engage in strengthening techniques abruptly not knowing that this can do them harm. Back strengthening exercises are to be done gradually rather than overdone. Back strengthening in lower back exercises, when done properly, can greatly aid in strengthening the spine. In doing strengthening exercises, one ought to listen to their body. This is important in knowing the body’s capability. What has to be primarily considered is that lower back exercises have to be done step by step. When it comes to this, it all points to knowing how much to do, when to rest and for how long. Thu, 15 Nov 2007 14:14:31 +0100 Back Surgery And Its Uncertainties http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-surgery http://www.healthzine.org/Back-aches/back-surgery Back pain has long been a common complaint in households, the workplace and in doctor’s offices. Back pain which is acute lasts from days to weeks, while chronic back pain is more severe. It has a longer duration which can last for years and can be debilitating. At times, the nature and causes of back pain can be vague. As the condition can degenerate when neglected, there are those who resort to back surgery. Back surgery is often taken as the last recourse for back, disc and spinal problems. After all, a back surgery or any surgery for that matter can be risky. A surgery is generally an invasive procedure. Possible complications can arise during the process. Such complications can result during the surgery itself or when employing anesthesia. And so it is with back surgery. The surgery may have its benefits, but the risks are considerable, too. When is back surgery necessitated? When is the procedure most effective and appropriate and for what condition? Apparently, back surgery is a recourse taken to address back problems and neurological conditions. A simple back surgery can greatly improve the condition of back pain patients. But the odds of a back surgery being successful are often dependent on certain factors. A major consideration is the severity of the patient’s back pain. Entailed for the surgery’s success is also an accurate diagnosis of the back problem. The same can be said with the patient’s physical and health condition – whether this would propitious for the surgery or not. A major factor to take into account is also the doctor’s expertise in performing the surgery. If all these conditions are auspicious, then the back surgery is more likely to bode well. But back surgery has high chances of being precarious as well. Statistics have shown that for every 1000 patients undergoing the surgery 14 of those aged 65 and above are more likely to die in 30 days. Owing to this, back pain specialists often discourage patients 70 years old and above from undergoing the surgery. In such cases, the risks of back surgery can outweigh the benefits. In some cases, the surgery has a high rate of success. Like in cases of patients with a herniated disc. And when the condition manifests an obvious protrusion or free floating fragment that impinges a nearby nerve. For less clear cut cases, though, back surgery can be risky. Such as when the cause of the back problem is obscure. Or when pain is predominant all throughout the back area. In these cases, back surgery may not be helpful. In fact, it can even aggravate the patient’s condition. Other than back problems, back surgery may be required for patients suffering from pain which sears into the leg or arm. Back surgery may also be necessary to prevent permanent paralysis. This is especially true for those experiencing neurological symptoms. Such symptoms can be loss of bowel or bladder control. The surgery can also ward off nerve damage for those with foot drop. Back surgery can be risky, but when done properly and accurately, it can be a godsend solution which can spare one from distressing pain. About the author.
