There’s not much taboo when a person discusses his or her sexual life. Even youngsters in their early teens engage in sex, and multiple partners at that. And for adults, sex has become a matter of mutual consent, regardless of whether it is ethical or not. People have become more aware of their freedom and choice, to the point that sex or sexuality is expressed irresponsibly. There are many consequences of this practice, one of which is sexually transmitted diseases. Statistics pertaining to std’s are on the rise, especially as such diseases are acquired through sexual contact. There may be more openness about sexuality but the issue of std’s still remain hush-hush. Stigma is still attached when they say somebody has a std. So when a person happens to contract a sexually transmitted disease, their initial reaction is that of shame. One would often be embarrassed to admit they have it, or even disclose that they had a test. When somebody suspects they have this disease, chances are they would be confused. Primarily about who to tell it to, or where to find help. If you happen to be in this dilemma, you ought to have a mature perception about the issue. A sexually transmitted disease is a disease, much more like other diseases. And in the same manner that you would deal with any disease, you ought to get yourself tested. Taking a std test is the first step to get an accurate diagnosis. In fact, having a std test is a mature decision. Not only is it an indication of sensibility, but a matter of taking responsibility- for the consequences of your conduct. And even more so, it is the proper means to take care of your health and yourself. If a sexually transmitted disease is neglected and left untreated, there can be massive consequences. Untreated std can lead to infertility, heart problems, brain damage, birth defects and even death. Not to mention that if you are a carrier of a virus, you can spread it on to others. If you feel you are at risk, it’s best to take the necessary measures. Have you had multiple sexual partners, or else had unsafe sex? You could be at risk, and to avoid further damage, have yourself tested. There are std symptoms which manifest a few days after intercourse, some only noticeable after several months. Some std symptoms show themselves after a year, and worse, std symptoms would not even show at all. So there is a possibility of a person having a std without them knowing it. However, there are common std symptoms, and they should be minded well. For women, sores, blisters or bumps may grow in the genitals, the anus or the mouth. Burning or itching sensation may arise when urinating. Unusual odor or discharge from the vagina or anus may manifest. The vagina may also bleed other than regular menstruation. Pains or aches may be experienced in the lower abdomen. What are possible std symptoms in men? Sores, blisters or bumps in the genitals, mouth or anus may develop. Men could experience burning and itching sensation when urinating as well. The genitals may give off unusual discharge. Itching, pain or discharge can be experienced in the anus. If you suspect one or any of these std symptoms beset you, don’t panic. These symptoms can be that of a sexually transmitted disease, or maybe they are not. The best way for you to determine is to have a std test. Do not second guess when it comes to this disease. Your first instinct may be to rush to the internet for self-diagnosis, but this is far too consequential. The most mature decision you can do is visit your doctor. Wherein there is better certainty about your disease and its treatment. About the author. Tue, 6 Jan 2009 05:14:23 +0100 Stop The Pain & Discomfort: Irritable Bowel Syndrome Treatment http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/irritable-bowel-syndrome-treatment http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/irritable-bowel-syndrome-treatment Looking for an irritable bowel syndrome treatment? Well, if you’re experiencing pain or discomfort in your abdomen, often relieved by or associated with a bowel movement; or if you’re having chronic diarrhea, constipation, or a combination of both, a swollen or bloated abdomen and the feeling that you have not finished a bowel movement, then you should be because these are just some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is not a serious illness but something that should also be taken seriously because of the discomfort and inconvenience that it gives. According to doctors, there are yet no known exact causes of irritable bowel syndrome. But fortunately, there is an irritable bowel syndrome treatment available that could help alleviate or even prevent the symptoms. It’s proper diet. It is the least expensive but not the least effective. This kind of treatment needs only your knowledge of the food that you eat, proper mindset and self discipline. In fact if you only eat the right food, you’ll be able to prevent IBS. Take note that soluble fiber is a must have in your daily meals. Be sure that your meal has the biggest portion of this. Whole grain cereals and fresh fruits are good sources of soluble fiber. Not all kinds of fiber, however, are highly recommended. Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, must be taken in with caution. It must not be eaten when you’re stomach is empty. So when you wake up in the morning, fill your stomach first with soluble fiber. It’s not only an irritable bowel syndrome treatment, but also a good prevention remedy for other ailments. Unlike fiber rich foods, fatty foods such as meat and dairy products are to be avoided as much as possible. They are rich in saturated fat that disrupts the normal functioning of your stomach by giving it a hard time digesting the food you eat. But this does not mean that you must completely deprive yourself of meat because other than being delicious, it is also a good source of protein which is also needed by your body. You only have to take it moderately at the minimum level. Or you may also try other substitutes such as beans. Beans are not only good source of protein but are also low in fat. Just like insoluble fiber, fatty foods should not also be eaten when your stomach is empty. Spices spice up your food, but they aggravate the symptoms too. So limit the use of spices. Aside from aggravating the symptoms, it is also gradually taking a toll on your kidneys. Yes, fatty and spicy are the foods you love but your body hates. It does not mean that you are to live without them for the rest of your life. Just always take them in moderation. A little of something is not bad. What is bad is too much of something. But if you can live without them, so much better it would be for you. This may sound to be too much for you but you can do this. You only have to have a proper mindset and self discipline. Knowledge without self discipline and proper mindset is useless. So put into practice what you know. This is the best irritable bowel syndrome treatment alternative that you can have without the help of doctors and expensive medicines. About the author. Tue, 23 Sep 2008 05:53:00 +0200 Gaining Balance In The Midst Of An Illness http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/illness http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/illness Things will forever change – a fact which we can always count on in life. But change, it is random. You may never know if it is something which will benefit you, or otherwise distress you. Our bodies change as we age. Over the years, we shift from one career to another. We move on to different places through the course of time. We find happiness from one and many other things. People come and go in our lives - we hold on and we let go. All these changes, they may come gradually, or the contrary- abruptly. A person may not really know in which manner his life will change as much as he would want to gain control. One is unlikely to put a rein on how life changes unfold, in what order and in which time or span of time. These constant changes will make us want to establish stability. But the stability we seek is ironically gotten hold of in how we adapt to change. But at some points, matters so drastic can come to shake what may seem as the solid ground a person stands upon. Alterations to the tedium of humdrum living a person lives can become so overpowering and cause them to be befuddled. One of the most agitating life alterations a person can ever go through is when he is beset by an illness, a life threatening illness. When a person is diagnosed with a threatening illness, all other areas of his life is rearranged. The thought of one’s life being threatened by an illness and of facing the unknown, is it not tremendously overwhelming? All living things follow cycles- seasons come and go as they should, in their own time. Planets rotate around the sun, constantly following their course. As much as these elements have their flow and rhythm, so does your body. But when an illness strikes, what has been given is to be reconsidered. How you have previously enjoyed sleep, and how you have relished food and eating, your facility to focus and concentrate, they can significantly be agitated. Foods which you used to delight in may begin to lose their appeal. The hours in which you used to enjoy sleep might be reduced or lengthened. And as much as such a word is so unkind, you might have to “suffer”. So you seek to do without such word- “suffering”. But how do you create a new ebb and flow so that you don’t “suffer” in the midst of an illness? How do you get hold of balance when all else about you is shaken? Human as you are, you need other people. More so at a time when the very person that you are is left almost defenseless to a force unseen yet so compelling- a threatening illness. It is when you will need to feel the warmth and essence of another human- to comfort and reach out to you. As much as experiencing a distressing illness is overwhelming, there are those who share the same plight as you. The scene which you behold may have become dreary, but with a companion, you can strive to see a different landscape, a more beautiful one. And this beautiful landscape is seen as you look beyond the dreary image the illness has placed before you. Look for compassion in the midst of an illness. Compassion for yourself and for others, and you will heal as a person. Your physical aspect may have grown weary, but seek to make your spirit alive, because it is that which truly lives. The life you have lived may be compromised, but look to something bigger and absolute- Life. And it is that which knows absolutely beyond your human comprehension. All you need to do is trust and let go. About the author. Dr. Rose Windale is a successful Health & Wellness Coach who has been advising and coaching individuals for many years. Thu, 24 Jul 2008 14:39:41 +0200 Herpes Simplex Information And Misinformation http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/herpes-simplex1 http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/herpes-simplex1 It will greatly help if you know information about a condition that besets you. In the same manner, you should also know any misinformation that you might have gained about the matter. Take the case of herpes simplex, a disease which has affected many people. The herpes simplex virus is of two types- 1 and 2. HSV 1 is known as cold sores which usually affects the mouth, and HSV 2 which is also known as genital herpes. There’s a common question about the herpes simplex virus which goes this way. A person suffers from herpes simplex 1 or cold sores and not from genital herpes. Would it be possible for that person to transfer the virus to their partner during oral sex? The person has HSV but at that time they are cold sore-free and therefore shows no symptoms. Can their partner be infected nevertheless? The chances may be slim, but the answer to this is YES. HSV 1 or 2 can infect the mouth and the genitals, even if during contact one partner doesn’t have an outbreak. People think they know about the disease, but for all they know, they could be misinformed, too. For one thing, one should be aware that they will not be able to tell whether a person has herpes simplex by how they look, act or live. One in six adults is said to have the virus and that’s about eighty million Americans. Of this vast number, included can be that cute date who forgot to use condom. You could be under the notion that intercourse is the only mode of transmission. Herpes is a sexually transmitted disease, but it can be acquired through other means. Skin to skin contact is one of them, and so is kissing and giving or receiving oral sex. If you happen to touch any infected area of the body, then you could get infected as well. Some people have HSV and may not be aware of it. As a consequence, they could be transmitting it to others unknowingly. After contracting the virus, symptoms usually show within two to twenty days. It might even take longer than that, especially in women. During this asymptomatic stage, a carrier could still pass on the virus to others. In between outbreaks, the virus can spread, even when the carrier shows no symptoms. If you happen to touch an outbreak of cold sores, not only your mouth and genital can be infected. Your eyes, fingers and other body parts can, too. If the virus is merely on the surface of your skin, you can wash it off with soap and water. But once you are infected, you are infected for life. Soap and water will not be able to get rid of the cold sores or the herpes outbreaks. There is no surefire way of protecting yourself from contracting HSV from an infected partner during intimacy. So your best bet would be abstinence. Next to abstinence, recommended is the use of latex condom, but it is not 100% effective. If you suspect that you or your partner has contracted HSV, see your local healthcare provider. That way, you or your partner could be given proper diagnosis and medical advice. You can never be too careful, so make sure that your partner is one that you can trust. Only then can you enjoy intimacy to the fullest and spare yourself from giving or receiving the gift that keeps on giving. About the author. Thu, 26 Jun 2008 08:30:16 +0200 Alternative Methods To Treat Grave’s Disease http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/Graves-disease http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/Graves-disease Many forms of autoimmune diseases can beset a person. Such diseases can be discomforting to the point of being severely inconvenient. One of the known autoimmune diseases which has to do with a thyroid disorder is Graves disease. Graves disease is known to be the world’s leading cause of thyroid enlargement. In turn, enlargement of the thyroid gland can lead to goiter. Having to suffer from goiter is uncomfortable to say the least. Suffering from Graves disease can get in the way of one’s normal activities and functioning and it is only proper that one seeks treatment upon having developed it. Surgery and drugs are popular options for treatment and many people have resorted to these measures. However, these conventional treatments for Graves disease are often expensive. And so others choose a divergent option in the form of alternative therapies. Alternative medicine has different principles when it comes to treating ailments and diseases. Conventional medicine and alternative medicine may have opposing views, but they can work together to be able to deliver more efficient results. That’s how it is, too, for dealing with Graves disease. Therapies in alternative medicine start by slowing down the body and relaxing it. Stress is reduced and flexibility of the body is boosted. Take for instance biofeedback. The biofeedback therapy is used for helping Graves disease patients deal with pain better. Common alternative treatments for the disease include tai chi, meditation and yoga. Natural healing methods are used in alternative medicine, and among them is proper nutrition. Changes in the diet are also included as a natural treatment for Grave’s. Peaches, sprouts, Brussels, cabbage and cauliflower are foods not recommended for Grave’s sufferers. They have to avoid these foods as they won’t be healthy for their condition. Such patients also have to limit on their intake of caffeine, sugar, artificial sweeteners, wheat and dairy products. On the other hand, brown rice and whole grains, steamed veggies and a little meat on the side are recommended for these people. Herbal medicine is another natural treatment. Scientists may not have supported the use of herbs for treatment of Grave’s, but anecdotal evidence surrounds success in this therapy. Motherwort and lemon balm are examples of herbal treatments for Graves disease. Iodine was considered as a treatment in the past, but it is considered dangerous in high doses. You may be considering using alternative treatments for Graves disease. If so, it’s best that you consult a qualified alternative healthcare practitioner for it. Have yourself thoroughly informed on your treatment options and weigh the pros and cons of them. Complementary alternative medicine is gaining more popularity these days. Many patients have found them appealing and actually more effective. Complementary medicine makes use of both conventional and alternative approaches. Conditions and diseases may have become more complicated in themselves. In response, treatment modalities and approaches have become more sophisticated as well. But as much as science and technology have become more modern and complex, the element of the “natural” is still crucial. Natural healing still remains to be very significant in the healing process, and it is to be enhanced and boosted as much as technology is being upgraded. About the author. Fri, 30 May 2008 09:03:18 +0200 Good Hygiene And Warding Off Infectious Disease http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/infectious-disease http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/infectious-disease Children are susceptible to many sorts of illnesses and diseases. It’s because at their young age, their bodies and its systems are yet developing. More so of their immune system- it is not yet fully developed. Such is why a child can easily fall prey to an infectious disease. An infectious disease is a disease which can be spread from one person to another. It can be through viruses, fungi or bacteria. Infections could be passed on from a child or an adult to another. Adults may not be in so much of a detriment as they have become immune to childhood illnesses and diseases. Children are apparently those posed at greater risks. How to ward of the threat of an infectious disease to a child then? But first thing, which places are risky for children? Often, they are those which children frequent. They can be child cares and day cares, enclosed playgrounds, kindergartens and other facilities. These are places where children have their leisure, learning and entertainment. Sure it may keep them safe from intruders and other physical threats. But the greatest threat lies in elements not seen. And they are bacteria, virus and fungi transmitted and responsible for infectious diseases. In these places, there is no way of preventing the spread of infections. In the home, children are protected from such threats. After all, they don’t get to be in contact with many people there. Just parents and adults they can trust and know well. So if members of the family are free from infections, there is less cause for worry. But children go out and interact. They have to be in contact with others as part of their growth. This entails risks for them, and one is of an infectious disease. Parents have a crucial role in remedying the matter. Primarily, they have to teach their kids proper hygiene. Proper hygiene starts at home and it’s something taught by parents to their kids. It may not so much be in nagging, but more so, by example. To make children learn good hygiene, parents should teach by example. The basics of proper hygiene begin with washing the hands. It can be as simple as that yet it is crucial. Washing the hands with clean water and soap and then drying are vital in preventing an infectious disease. Many well know that kids are in the habit of putting their hands in their mouths. This is one surefire manner of contracting an infection. A child has to be taught as well of proper handling of personal belongings. They should be taught that utensils such as spoons, forks, glasses and plates are not to be shared, especially in public places. The same can be said with toothbrushes and even hair brushes. Kids have to be taught on the risks they are exposed to. It would be better to educate them as to why they have to practice good hygiene. A child ought to enjoy the best of childhood, and so let them be. But parents ought to consider the child’s safety along the way, and only can childhood be more worthwhile- spent with fun and good health. About the author. Tue, 22 Apr 2008 15:11:09 +0200 The “stress Culture” And Irritable Bowel Syndrome http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/irritable-bowel-syndrome1 http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/irritable-bowel-syndrome1 There is a collective and inherent desire for multitasking. People, especially in urban areas, have to do several things at a time. This is generally brought about by fast-paced living. Of meeting up with deadlines and coping with tons of paperwork. Along with these is network and client communications to attend to. There seems to be just so much to do and yet there is little time. This is modern day living, and this is what majority faces up with everyday. It comes as no surprise why so many people end up being too stressed. Everybody seems to be in a hurry and responsibilities appear to be endless. Many well know that stress is associated with various health conditions and diseases. Stress affects the mind, the emotions and the body. And no doubt, being overstressed can lead to a breakdown. One of the conditions in which stress is significantly linked to is irritable bowel syndrome. In fact, the link between the two has been established by studies. This goes to say then that stress management measures can be a way to alleviate the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Treatments for IBS include stress relief and reduction methods, particularly while eating. When eating, it is recommended that one eats slowly and in a relaxed environment. This is where busy and stressed people may fall short. It can be that they eat while in their desk, or in front of the computer or tv. With the culture of multitasking, people are also more apt to eat while doing something else. These in turn could lead to increased symptoms of IBS in relation to stress. Reducing stress at mealtime may mean that one ought to decrease their workload. They should also take multiple breaks during the day. The same goes for exercise- it is a recommended relaxation technique measure. Say for instance, walking. Walking can contribute so much when it comes to delivering relaxation. Walking will induce the release of endorphins in the blood stream which stimulates a feeling of happiness and positivity. And in return, the body would begin to feel more relaxed. A regular exercise program is highly recommended for a thorough IBS treatment plan. It is advisable as well for IBS sufferers to eat several small meals a day. Small but frequent meals seem to be a better option for such people. Eating large meals is seen to put more stress on the body. Irritable bowel syndrome symptoms in this regard would be aggravated. Eating small but frequent meals is said to be a healthier way of eating than what most is accustomed to. Such manner of eating will be favorable not only for IBS sufferers but those who aim to lose weight too. Metabolism will be hastened as well with this eating practice. In the same manner, it is recommended for those suffering from heartburn- it will reduce the symptoms. For a complete IBS treatment plan, one ought to mind what and when they eat. And most of all, they must take time to reduce or eliminate stress. This way, not only will irritable bowel syndrome be relieved, but a better quality of life all in all will be promoted. Thu, 3 Apr 2008 07:56:37 +0200 Sexually Transmitted Diseases And Their Risks http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/sexually-transmitted-diseases http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/sexually-transmitted-diseases True, sex is to be enjoyed without fear and inhibitions, but one must be safe about it. It is best done within the right context and with a person one can trust. With the significant risk of sexually transmitted diseases, it’s better safe than sorry. After all, sexually transmitted diseases can have grave consequences. Some sorts of these diseases are incurable, others even deadly such as HIV and AIDS. At the height of the moment, one may not be able to think about protection against sexually transmitted diseases, but protection measures have to be borne in mind. And yes, implemented. So much can be at risk when one is not careful. For instance, in untreated cases of Chlamydia- they can result to infertility and birth defects. Chlamydia is among the most widely circulating sexually transmitted diseases. Then there is HPV or genital warts- it is linked to female cervical cancer. As for herpes, it is an incurable skin condition and it affects the genitals. Then there are ominous sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS and HIV. The risk of contracting such diseases is astoundingly high. Take for instance the studies conducted by the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention. They cited that there are 2.8 new cases of Chlamydia every year in the United States alone. Women are especially susceptible in contracting this STD. The rate of new cases of Chlamydia among women is 3% higher than that of men. Abstinence remains to be the best protection against STD’s. As others may not be content with such a measure, using condoms is also effective. The use of both male and female condoms would do. But there is a better and safer option and that is to use male condom along with spermicide. There are women who use contraceptive measures, but it must be noted that they are for a different purpose. Contraceptives are for preventing pregnancy and they can’t protect against STD’s. To be properly protected against them, condom has to be used 100% of the time. Testing for such diseases is also an important thing to consider. Getting tested regularly for STD’s is an essential matter for a healthy and happy sex life. Serious physical consequences can be instigated when an STD goes untreated, so sexually active people must be wary. Treatments are often quick and painless, although it is dependent on the nature of infection. On the practical side, it is always wise to play with caution. So it is with matters concerning sex. Much can be at risk with reckless and negligent behavior. When it comes to sexually transmitted diseases, it may not only be one person’s health at stake. Their partner’s and their child’s can be jeopardized as well. A healthy, monogamous relationship with a person one can trust is the best means to enjoy sex to the fullest. Other than this, there is again protection- the use of condom- so as to reduce or eliminate the risk of infection. When it comes to STD’s, prevention is better than cure, as sometimes a cure may be too late. About the author. Mon, 17 Mar 2008 04:56:04 +0100 Treatment For Crohn's Disease The Natural Way http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/crohns-disease1 http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/crohns-disease1 Many people now opt to remedy some ailments and diseases the natural way. This is often in the form of natural remedies. As suggested, natural remedies are measures used for natural healing. They could be in the form of exercises, food eaten, or with herbal medicine. And there are of course other alternative healing methods which are pointed toward the same purpose. Among the diseases which can be remedied naturally is crohns disease. Crohns disease is a one which has to do with the gut. People suffering from it may have issues on intestinal blockage. This condition could be due to the inflammation of the intestines. This can cause an obstruction in the passage of food along the intestines, and in itself, this could cause so many problems. Intestinal blockage due to crohns disease may not always happen, but in time, it most likely will. Eighty percent of people diagnosed with crohns disease often undergo surgery, and they can go in more than once. This is among the major problems caused by crohn’s. More so, those afflicted may also suffer from depression, and that their lifestyle has become limited in a way. But there is good news, as natural means can now be resorted to to treat crohns disease. Recent studies have shown positive results pertaining to such measures as they can be effective. For instance, yoga and light exercises- they can remedy crohns disease naturally. They can prove to be helpful in alleviating and relieving the symptoms, not to mention that they can keep one in better shape. It is essential for people with crohn’s to also rid their body of toxins, and for this, going to the sauna would be helpful. When done a couple of times a week, a sauna could be beneficial for patients. The same can be said with swimming in non-chlorinated water. Salt water can balance the body’s mineral content, and this is undoubtedly healthful. These are quite simple measures, but their efficacy was proven by many patients. Science has discovered other natural means for curing inflammation in the intestines. One of them is the herb aloe vera, and aloe vera has been known to have potent healing and health properties. Living with crohn’s can affect the health in so many ways. As passage of food in the intestines can be restricted, nutrition issues can occur. So it is with other physical discomforts. It’s best then that the disease is remedied, and one should be mindful of means for treating it. People usually go for pharmaceuticals and invasive procedures. They are after all conventional means. But there are those who may find drawbacks with them. For these people, they have other options, and they are natural remedies. Tue, 26 Feb 2008 09:17:23 +0100 Taking Control Of An Overactive Bladder http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/overactive-bladder http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/overactive-bladder What is an overactive bladder? What are its symptoms and what brings it about? An overactive bladder is most often hard to control. It has to do with how one urinates. It can be that one feels the urge to go to the bathroom and yet urine will not come out once they are there. Or they could have the sudden urge to urinate and not make it in time to the bathroom. One may also have frequent trips to the bathroom- as much as 8 times over a 24 hour period. Worse, one may even plan their day ahead around going to the bathroom. All these, they are possible manifestations of a condition called overactive bladder. The possible causes of an overactive bladder? Surgery can be one- the procedure can cause damage to the nerves controlling the urinary tract. Otherwise it can weaken the muscles. This in turn would lead to involuntary contractions. It will then be harder to control the bladder- and overactive bladder can be the result. Chronic illnesses, they can also bring about an overactive bladder. Among these illnesses are Parkinson’s disease, stroke, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and even obesity. And some medications, such as narcotics, diuretics and sedatives- they can cause the onset of an overactive bladder. There are those who regard the overactive bladder condition to be a natural part of aging, but that may not necessarily be so. An overactive bladder may not also be a result of drinking excessive fluids. It is also not a result of an infection, although the symptoms may be similar. One does not have to constantly deal with an overactive bladder as measures can be taken. When one suffers from the condition, entailed is a visit to their health professional. That way, the possibility of serious ailments can be ruled out. A person with an overactive bladder suffers from involuntary contractions of the bladder. This leads to sudden, frequent and strong urges to urinate. One will then experience urinary incontinence, yet another term for overactive bladder. What are the possible recourses for treatment? For one thing, there are pharmaceutical drugs. There are also pelvic muscle exercises which can help younger women. Example is the kegel exercises which can strengthen the pelvic muscles. Urinary incontinence or an overactive bladder can then be alleviated or even prevented. Kegel exercises are helpful for stronger muscle control. The same can be said with vaginal weight training. Through this measure, the vaginal muscles will be tightened resulting to stronger muscle control as well. And a mild electrical shock, it can stimulate muscle contractions. Through a mild electrical shock the pelvic floor muscle can be toned. Other measures for urinary incontinence are biofeedback and behavioral therapies. There is yet another measure, an effective one, which can help with bladder control. It’s a natural supplement called Flotrol. Flotrol is a proven safe and natural product which can promote bladder health. No need to suffer from side effects as Flotrol is guaranteed all natural. Mon, 11 Feb 2008 09:36:16 +0100 The Digestive System And Its Disorders http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/digestive-system http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/digestive-system The body is composed of an interrelation of different organic systems. As they are interrelated, one affects the other. When one system is ill, most likely there will be consequences on another. Such is why overall health should be a person’s topmost concern, even with what may seem trivial health matters. After all, what seems trivial can possibly be aggravated. And real problems can be instigated. Take the case of the digestive system. There are countless digestive system disorders, ranging from the inconsequential to the severe. Nevertheless, disorders of the digestive system are discomforting. They can cause so much inconvenience. The digestive system is concerned with food as nourishment for the body. How it is taken, absorbed, processed and excreted. The digestive system by all means performs one of the most crucial functions in the body. And so one should take time tending to their digestive health. Whatever digestive system disorders there may be should be properly addressed. When it comes to digestive system disorders, the nervous system is usually associated. The causes of most digestive system disorders are vague, but it can be supposed that nervous system disorders have to do with it. Disorders of the digestive system can possibly be linked to disorders of the nervous system. Isn’t it quite common for a person to experience queasiness in the stomach when they are stressed or anxious? There are quite a number of digestive system disorders. Some of them can be minor and easily treated. Others moderate, and others still severe. These severe cases can be difficult to diagnose and furthermore treated. Some nervous disorders affect the digestive system, thereby causing irregularities. These are known to be related conditions, and it remains unclear which came first – problems of the digestive system or those of the nervous system. Among the countless digestive disorders, one of the most common is heartburn. Heartburn affects 25% of the population of the United States. More so, the disorder strikes this percentage on a monthly basis. In contrast, heartburn affects merely 11% of the people in Eastern countries. Heartburn occurs when the stomach produces excess acid. Stress and anxiety can cause this condition- increased stomach acid production. As such, they can be possible causes of heartburn. Then there is acid reflux. Acid reflux is also a common digestive system disorder, and it is also known as GERD or gastro-esophageal reflux disease. Acid reflux, when left untreated can lead to more serious disorders, and it has to be given medical attention accordingly. Tending to digestive health is therefore essential. Thu, 31 Jan 2008 13:50:51 +0100 Autoimmune Diseases: Disarray Of The Immune System http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/autoimmune-diseases http://www.healthzine.org/Diseases/autoimmune-diseases Our immune system is our best defense against invaders. Invaders of the body, that is. These invaders can be bacteria, virus and fungi. These elements actually attack our bodies everyday. But thanks to our immune system, they are unable to wreak significant havoc. The immune system is indeed crucial. It acts as the body’s protector and thus keeps us healthy. But that may not always be the case. Especially with autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune diseases occur when the immune system attacks itself. That is of course, by mistake, and much is yet to be known about this process or its causes. “Auto” actually means “self”. So by autoimmune diseases, those are diseases caused by the immune system itself. The tissues are the components most often affected by autoimmune diseases. The tissue is that which binds the body’s tissues and the organs together. Autoimmune diseases can affect various parts of the body. They can be the nerves, the muscles and the digestive system. More women than men are affected by autoimmune diseases. As to why, experts are still in a puzzle. Autoimmune diseases are also said to run in families. During pregnancy, a mother exchanges cells with her baby. This is said to induce autoimmunity. To date, there are around 80 known autoimmune diseases. It is only important that you gain awareness of these diseases. In cases wherein you think you may have acquired them, it is then that you can take measures. Early detection has so much to do with alleviation and even remission of a disease. So it is with autoimmune diseases. When an autoimmune disease is intervened in its initial stages, there are more chances that it can be controlled. That way, further complications and damage can be prevented. Primarily, it’s best that you know about the symptoms of common autoimmune diseases. These symptoms may however be confusing, especially as they can be similar with one disease to another. Among the most common autoimmune diseases are Grave’s disease, Lupus and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The following are the symptoms of Grave’s disease: bulging eyes, insomnia, shaky hands, irritability and sweating. A person with lupus on the other hand may experience joint swelling and damage, as well as inflammation and impairment of the heart, lungs, the brain and the skin. The same can be said with a “butterfly rash” on the nose and the cheeks and sensitivity to the sun. As for indications of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, they can be muscle pain, tiredness, dry hair, rough skin and constipation. When you have an autoimmune disease, you may experience a sudden onset of these symptoms. The best recourse then would be to seek medical help- go to your doctor immediately. It is then that medications may be administered according to the nature of the disease. When the symptoms are mild, pain killers may be employed. For severe cases, they may require prescription medications. Medicines often hinder the progression of autoimmune diseases. It is best to take preventive measures for them such as eating healthy, exercising and getting enough rest. That way, the immune system is boosted and is less likely to be in a disarray.
