By health and fitness, it doesn’t just mean being trim and free from disease. Health and fitness is actually all encompassing. It involves the mind, the emotions and the attitude, not just physical well-being. For most people though, weight issues are the foremost impediment to health and fitness. After all, being trim can contribute so much to being fit and healthy and to live with well-being. Being fit and trim primarily has to do with looking good. Many people cannot deny this. But losing weight, it has to be more than that. Losing weight should also have to do with being healthy. Health and fitness in this sense then mean looking good and feeling good. Health and fitness should be about being fit and free from disease. It also entails mental and emotional well-being. A winning attitude which makes one push head on with the challenges on living. When one thinks of all the reasons why they should achieve their goal, then they must come to terms with it. Then they can say “I want it, and I will achieve it”. What can be a more proper mindset for achieving health and fitness. When one has gathered their mental initiative, it is then that they start to work physically. During early times of man’s existence, and before there was civil society, man used to go for hours, even days, in search of food. Back then, he has to walk very long distances for long periods of time, even days, just to track that game, or dig that root crop or gather that fruit, berry or honey. His lifestyle worked both ways for him. He has to be physically fit to do it, and by doing so he becomes physically fit even further. Then, physical fitness was a way of life. In these modern times with so many choices, it is not the case anymore. There is easily available and accessible transportation. Food is easily available, and many of our jobs, even recreation have become have become sedentary. Physical fitness took the background. Man found a new lifestyle. Easy and convenient as it may seem, he has deprived himself of physical movement, and thus his physical fitness and health is adversely affected. Many kinds of diseases and ailments due to lack of physical exercise have cropped-up. But as more and more people are realizing the importance and benefits of physical fitness, they are starting to make exercise a part of their daily activities. Physical fitness have become their lifestyle. Achieving physical fitness doesn’t mean we have to punish ourselves by exercising to exhaustion. Some people have the notion of no pain, no gain in exercise. This may not be entirely wrong, but this just doesn’t work for everyone. We have different physical fitness levels, what works for the other guy may not work for you. Physical fitness exercise need not always be confined to the gym. It may be those hobbies that you really enjoy, like ballroom dancing, gardening, etc. We can also incorporate Physical fitness exercise into our daily activities. Park you car a block or two from your work. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Take your train at the next station, instead of the one nearest you. The quality and quantity of the food we eat also contributes to our well-being. Some foods, especially sugar and caffeine, may give us a sense quick energy boost, but then it is just a short period of high. After which, we tend to feel even more exhausted than when we first took them. Last, but certainly not the least, for physical fitness, we need to have good quantity and quality of sleep. It is during sleep that we really get to rest and replenish our energies, as our bodies relax and repair themselves. No age is really too late when it comes to improving our physical fitness. Just keep in mind that, as we have different levels of physical condition, it is really advisable to consult your physician before you start any physical fitness program. So as to determine and plan a program most suited and most beneficial to you. “Mens sana in corpore sano”, a sound mind in a sound body, as a saying goes, is very essential in achieving overall health. And these could be had by having the proper balance of good nutrition, exercise, and sleep. We may not have to walk long distances to hunt, or gather food as our ancestors did a long time ago.
