Your home should be a place of warmth and comfort. And if you live alone, it is the ultimate place where you can be yourself. Living alone has its advantages as well as disadvantages. If you live alone, you get to gain control of how you want to live and in managing your household. But then again, “alone” literally means “without company”, and for some people, this may seem like a disadvantage. This does not have to be the case, especially if you find yourself other “companions”. By this, you can have a pet, or else tend house plants, or rather “live” house plants.

Plants give off life, or the warmth and feel of life. So even if there is no other person or people living with you, in essence, there is something “alive” living with you - in the form of house plants. And just as you would with a pet or another companion, you have to take care of your house plants. How is it to take care of house plants? Care and attention are needed by these living things in order to thrive. As you have chosen to “adopt” and tend to them, this is required of you. Attend to your house plants on a daily and regular basis and care for them, and you will feel their appreciation as they share “life” with you.
Make sure that you do what is within your means to enhance their successful growth. In the first place, if you plan on buying house plants, you might as well plan well. Buy them at the right time of the year. For instance, if you buy a plant during cold or close to freezing weather, you risk putting it to shock. In the same manner, you can possibly cause the plant to die if you buy it during summer and then leave it in the car or outside for too long. And then sunlight, a vital ingredient to life. You have to ensure that you are giving the right amount of it to your plant. Your “home companion” may need direct or indirect sunlight, and this you should not deprive it of. Remember, too little or too much may cause your house plant to die. So get to know the nature of your house plant and the amount of sunlight it needs. Aside from sunlight, take into account the temperature- it has to be conducive for its growth. Your “living companion” needs the most suitable environment to sustain its life and growth. This again you have to provide. Make your plant comfortable in its environment, make your home its home. What goes with temperature is the humidity of the environment. Allow your plants to grow with proper temperature and humidity. Most of all, there is water, or watering your house plants. Water is among the basic nourishment for plants. Give it to them in the right amounts and at the right time. In the same manner as you need food, your plants need water. House plants are living things, and as you have decided to welcome them in your home, you take responsibility. They may be mere plants as others may think, but they have life. This life you have to nurture. In doing so, you may even nurture yours.
