Many people are aware of the benefits of meditation, so they seek to know the practice. Living has become stressful for so many, and they are looking for means to cope. Stress and anxiety can be so compelling to the point that it can drive a person out of their senses. Many people seek to find their center, or to gain balance. To be able to cope with stress, and not to be swayed by it or to “fall”. One of the ways for a person to find his center and gain inner balance is through meditation. Meditation as a mind and spiritual practice has withstood the ages.

It addresses the needs of the inner self, and these needs are those which are of the essence. In practicing meditation, focus and calmness are needed. But focusing may be challenging for some. As much as they would want to initiate meditation, they cannot. The mind can go on a million miles in an hour, and one can be lost in the incessant chatter of anxiety and distress. They may not be able to achieve the meditative state the practice entails. But there is an alternative to meditation, or a proactive alternative to meditation. In the same manner as meditating can bring spiritual growth and inner balance, so can this practice. Meditation is one form of spiritual communication with the Higher Self, but it is not the only form.
There is a practice called “contemplation”, and it is a means of journeying inward. Contemplation as an inward practice may have been overlooked, but its benefits remain significant. Through contemplation, a person can explore and keep in touch with the inner world. When contemplating, the mind is stilled as it focuses on a certain subject. Calmness is achieved, and the senses become receptive. Giving the mind a subject to contemplate upon allows it to achieve a higher state of understanding. When a person contemplates, he practices a private devotion, a concentration on spiritual aspects. Stated simpler, it is “studying”, or an act of considering with attention. To contemplate is to achieve a state of intention, or expectation. In a higher sense, contemplation is sensing a mystical awareness of the Absolute Divine. A “mystical awareness”. Is not such a state the goal of meditation as well? So in contemplating and meditating, an awareness of the being of the Divine is achieved. Different means for the same purpose, one- contemplating- relatively more straightforward than the other. When a person contemplates, he considers any aspect of life or divine being with attention. This attentiveness he renders steadily with intention and expectation. What is it that a person “intends” for or expects? In his inner senses, a person must create anticipation or receptiveness, and it will come- joy, happiness , a more profound understanding. Balance and stillness within. These can come to be as one has felt the realization and awareness of the Divine and the Higher Self. In a quiet and comfortable place, a person can sit or lie down and find a worthwhile subject to contemplate upon. It can be the wonder of nature, life or any aspect of life, or the beauty of the Divine. He can use his imagination and feel being in all and to be all. The heart and the senses will then be filled. Thoughts are thought of in the mind, but the heart feels these thoughts. The mind intends, and the heart expects - this is contemplation.
