Peace of mind and inner calmness - don’t these words sound so sweet? Aren’t they what everybody longs for, and the ultimate goal that everybody wants to achieve? It has been said that everything else becomes futile when one doesn’t have peace of mind. Most people say that what they want to have are money and recognition.
It all seems so appealing and tempting to want worldly fame and possessions. How about you- what is it that you really want? Sure you may say that you want to be rich and famous, like what almost everybody says. But is it what you really want and is it your ultimate goal? Think for a while what would happen if you have much money and yet you don’t have peace of mind.

Would your material possessions be able to satisfy you? This is not to say that material wealth is bad. But there are things which are more essential. These things are what you ought to look for and only then can you enjoy the rest, and that includes material wealth. It has often been said that the most important things are those which are unseen.
Look into the real essence of yourself- you are spirit. Your spirit is that which gives life to your being. It is your core and your seed. This goes to say that you have to initially nurture that seed and make it grow. Until it blooms and becomes fruitful. And how do you nourish your spirit? By taking time to keep in touch with it.
Prayer, meditation, reflection. And these are to be coupled with deeds and action. Spiritual growth is actually a personal quest. Teachers, mentors and elders may be able to guide you, but it will eventually come down to you and yourself. The experience will be your own, and oftentimes it may not be pleasant.
It’s actually pain which makes us grow and brings us to much realizations. And if you choose to learn from the realizations rather than become bitter, then it means that you are growing. The journey of life is all about pain, but there is a purpose. You should not be disheartened as pain is the essence which opens your eyes.
Only then can you gain wisdom and understanding. And wisdom and understanding leads to peace of mind. Having peace of mind doesn’t mean that you become callous or invincible. When you have peace of mind, you are actually more in touch with yourself- your Spiritual Self. And you become a better human.
You begin to understand that pain and suffering has a purpose. And you choose to see that purpose instead rather than seeing the pain. Until your eyes are opened and then you can see. What it means to live and to be human. And only can other things become better.
Relationships and other worldly affairs become more worthwhile. You can appreciate the material and yet it wouldn’t take control of you. So think of where you invest yourself, your time and your effort. More than anything else, you have to value yourself and your spirit. It is that which you should mind first, and everything else will just follow.
