Paving The Way To Success With Emotional Intelligence

Tags: , , ,

2007-09-24As much as one’s intellectual aptitude measured by their IQ or intelligence quotient can go a long way towards their personal success, another factor has been established which can make one go further. It is known as an individual’s emotional intelligence or their EI, or EQ for that matter. The concept of emotional intelligence was not discovered until 1985 by Dr.

Wayne Payne and the term became all the more popular in 1995 when Daniel Goldman published his book entitled “Emotional Intelligence”. Emotional intelligence is basically an innate ability, or an inherent sense of an individual to be able to perceive, assess and influence their own emotions as well as that of others.

Peter Salovey and John Mayer conducted studies in the early 1990’s in which they were able to come up with a working model of emotional intelligence. It defined EI, or EQ as the capacity to understand and reason with emotions. Furthermore in their studies, Salovey and Mayer broke down emotional intelligence into several categories.

First, IE is thought of to be connoted with self-awareness. By such, it means the ability and need to understand one’s own emotions as well as knowing and acknowledging them. Self-motivation is also an essential aspect of emotional intelligence. It is the ability to keep focused on a goal despite one’s level of self-doubt and impulsiveness.

Need management which is the ability to handle emotions maturely in relevance to present circumstances is thought of to be one of the categories of emotional intelligence as well. The same can be said with relationship management which enables an individual to handle conflict negotiations and third party mediations. Furthermore, there is empathy, commonly regarded as the ability to tune into the feelings of others and effectively understand others as much as one understands themselves.

EI plays a vital role and is in fact fundamental in learning. As much as EI lacks the volume of quantitative empirical research than that of IQ or intelligence quotient, researches in the field of cognitive learning emphasized the importance of emotional intelligence. Reports published by the National Center for Clinical Infant Programs cited that a student’s level of success in learning new information is predominantly dependent on their levels of confidence, curiosity, ability to communicate, elatedness, intentionality and cooperativeness- traits mainly associated with emotional intelligence.

Throughout one’s lifetime, their IQ is said to be unchanging, which is a stark contrast to emotional intelligence which can be cultivated and enhanced. By practicing empathy, one can improve their level of emotional intelligence. The same can be said with being considerate of others or being constructive and positive rather than finding faults.

To achieve better emotional intelligence, one should not undermine the significance of interpersonal relationships and being effective not only in social interactions but in establishing emotional connections as well. Such is basically an integral aspect of emotional intelligence which can pave the way for personal success.
